I've gotten part of the puzzle solved. I know that XP only officially supports Java versions up to Jre7u80, not Java 8+, and I know that the newest versions of Minecraft require Java 8+. Ergo, only older versions of Minecraft should be able to work on XP. I also know that individual profiles can be set to use locally installed versions of Java, instead of the version of Java 8 that ships with Minecraft. So, I have my profile set to use Minecraft beta 1.7.3, and to run a locally installed version of Java.
Unfortunately, this gives me nothing but a whited-out window. The whole computer doesn't crash, but the Java virtual machine does become unresponsive and the task manager is the only way to kill it. This happens regardless of whether I use Java 6 or 7, and it happens regardless of whether I use 32-bit Java or 64-bit Java (yes, I'm one of the lucky few with 64-bit XP). I always uninstall each version of Java before trying a new one.
What's going wrong?

Hello. I have also tried to run Minecraft on windows xp. Sorry to say but it is almost impossible to do because the graphics card cannot run the game.
If you are using a virtual machine it is not possible again because the virtual machine also does not have a good graphics card because it is a virtual machine.

Uhh... no, that's definitely not it. The GPU has nothing to do with the operating system. The GPU runs Minecraft just fine when I boot into Win 8.1 or Linux.

XP has prettier themes and skins, including animated wallpapers.
LOL just kidding. I actually have Minecraft installed on all 3 of my partitions in order to minimize reboots. Likewise, my Minecraft server directory has two MS-DOS batch files (one for XP, one for Win8.1) and a Bash file (for Linux) so that I can fire up the server no matter what OS I'm in.
How do I run Minecraft on Windows XP?

Java 8 works on XP: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44401911/window-xp-and-java-8
While that might be true, attempting to run Minecraft on its own internal build of Java 8 does not get it to run on Windows XP.

What, exactly, is Forge, and how is it relevant to this discussion?
