Development on the server I work with has stagnated because my game no longer works. At all. After the Mojang logo appears the game freezes and can't self-close. For some ungodly reason this only happens in versions 1.9 and up. Unfortunately most of the server is functions and advanced commands which were introduced in 1.12, and mob teams are vital.
The game does not produce a crash report.
I've tried the following:
Re-installing Minecraft
Running Minecraft from Technic Launcher
Changing launch settings
Hard Rebooting
Java is up-to date in build 1.8.0_171-b11
Running up-to date Windows 10 with Intel i7 on Alienware 15 Laptop
Crash was briefly fixed upon latest widows update before the game was re-opened, upon which it crashed again.

What's the problem and how do I go about fixing it?
set the launcher to remain open after game launch, that way you will at least be able to see what the game is trying to do at the time of the freeze even if it doesnt give you a crash log.

What's the problem and how do I go about fixing it?
Hard to determine without any logs. Start by updating graphics drivers, check point 2 of https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/java-edition-support/2827415-1-12-faqs-read-before-posting
Run a scan with adwcleaner, try using the old launcher.

SOLVED
The culprit was... Discord?
I don't know why, but simply turning off updates on computer startup and not opening Discord before the game is opened totally fixed it. Huh.
