I've been trying to get a 512x512 resource pack to work with Minecraft 1.8, but the game switches to the default pack when I try to go to the resource pack. I've been able to run these high-detail packs in other versions than 1.8.
The error in particular;

Various fixes around seem to include either dedicating more RAM or upgrading your graphics card, and both of these seem incredibly unnecessary considering both that I've been able to do this in past and my PC's specs;
CPU: Intel i7-4770k
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-PRO
Graphics: 2x GTX 780 Ti (SLI)
Memory: 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3
Is there any way to get around this error, or am I stuck with lower-detail packs?
Remove all resource packs. To do this go to options.txt in your
minecraft folder and find "resourcepacks=[name.zip]" or something like
that. Replace it with "resourcepacks=[]". Sometimes this can be fixed by
using the mod Optifine.

I don't actually think his computer is too weak. He's got two GTX 780 Ti in SLI (my goodness) and 16 GB of RAM.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the resource pack is broken in some way. Try to tweak it to remove the file that it keeps having problems with.

Are you running Windows 8? I was having trouble with the launcher and it was preventing me from running ultra high res textures and view distances over 16 chunks even through my system is more than good enough. Try going to C:\ Program Files (x86)\Minecraft\, then right click and go run as administrator. This worked for me.

Still, try using the 256x or 128x version of the pack.

Your computer is too weak to use 512x textures.

anything higher than around 64x and 128x will not work without optifine. get the latest verstion of optifine and it should work.
Actually, my computer runs no mods and can handle 128x.
Still, 256x+ does not work without the latest Optifine.
