So, big apologies in advance, because I suck at understanding computer hardware and driver setup.
I'm using Windows x64, the latest OptiFine, latest Java x64, Conquest resource pack.
I upgraded my graphics card to a Sapphire R9 290X because I really wanted to be able to use SEUS, but before I even got around to downloading the shaders mod I'm seeing drastically reduced framerates (around 7 to 12fps, was getting 30ish before), despite not having turned up any video settings, and I just have no idea what to do. I've updated all of my drivers; I just want MC to be playable again.
I'm sure more info is needed, but again, I know very little.
Any assistance is appreciated.
SEUS is to be played only on the newest setups to get any decent framerates. People who get 300+ prior usually get 30-50 with seus which is in the range of playable.
Which I understand... but I'm not even running SEUS. All I'm using is OptiFine and the Conquest resource pack. Even dropping the resource pack I'm only getting 25-40 fps. I was pretty much getting that before with a Geforce 9800gt.
Then install the latest drivers from AMD: AMD drivers. (This one is for windows 7 64bit.)
If the problem is not solved yet. Then you need to check if your computers power supply has enough amp's, not just WATT's to run the card. As something is holding it back to run at full performance.
(As zohar101 suggested, if you bought a powerhouse of a laptop, make sure you are running the game with the AMD GPU instead of the one that is built into the CPU. You can do that by right clicking the program executable or in the AMD configuration program, telling your AMD drivers to always run.)
Also, if you have an desktop computer with a fairly new CPU from Intel or AMD. You may have to disable the integrated (cpu/apu) graphics in the bios settings, as the system may in some cases get confused. For that, you will have to read the instructions manual. Good luck!
Indeed, if you are only using 1gb or less for modded Minecraft. That is most likely your problem.
Depending on how you run Minecraft, there is a lot of good tutorials on the forum on how to allocate more ram with an easy "-xmx3g" command or similar.
Just leave at least 2gb left for your system to use.
I followed your instructions, starting with the uninstallation of my old Geforce Nvidia drivers, reinstalled the AMD drivers via Catalyst, and deleted the config files you mentioned (after making a backup), and when I'm up to 300fps regularly, and topped out at 446fps!
This was all right off the bat with the vanilla textures launched in OptiFine. When I turned on Conquest and turned on Fancy Trees/Clouds/Fog/Grass it dropped a good bit, I'm still sitting around 175fps in single player, and 135fps on a remote server.
I'll probably just enjoy the fact that I can play again before worrying about any shaders, and look into allocating more RAM towards MC at that point. Thank you guys!

If you guys are still curious for whatever reason, my setup is:

They will be remade. If problem is not solved, you need to see if you system drivers are cleanly installed, especially if you used Nvidia before.
You can make sure of that with a simple tool from Guru3D: Display driver uninstaller.

I'll try the things suggested when time permits and report back. Again, I appreciate the help and time!
