So I was playing Minecraft a while back, and I had just figured out how to spawn Ender Crystals. So, naturally I thought "Hey, let's try to kill the Ender Dragon by spawning and destroying crystals really fast."
Now for the disclaimer: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RECREATE THIS. It will destroy Minecraft, your OS, and possibly your entire computer. You have been warned.
So, I killed the Ender Dragon, and it started its death sequence. But the beam from the destroyed crystal was still there. Then a bunch of random-colored pixels appeared (actually, they were about 4x8 splotches), and Minecraft crashed. Then my entire screen crashed, and I had to restart. Then, for a time, I couldn't play, because it would come up, then the splotches would appear, and the window would freeze (everything else worked though).
Finding this particularly odd, I did a complete reinstall of minecraft (saving only my mods (which I wasn't using), my saves, and my launcher profiles. This didn't help at all, so I decided to see what was trully going on. Since it was obvious that the problem wasn't in Minecraft, I checked my Unreal Tournament game, which I had set to use OpenGL. It also underwent this strange problem, and crashed. So, thinking that *somehow* Minecraft had damaged OpenGL, I reinstalled my graphics drivers and library, restarted my computer, pulled up Minecraft, and, hey! No more - oh, there they are. So OpenGL wasn't the root. Trying to find answers, I noticed that my dropdown terminal (Yakuake for Fedora with KDE), I tried reinstalling my GUI. Low and behold, the problem was fixed until I started playing for more than 5 minutes.
Starting to get REALLY irritated, I tried reinstalling my entire OS, and ended up losing EVERYTHING in the process (my USB drive had corrupted my files). As I brought it up one bit at a time, it seemed to be fixed. So I left it alone.
Cut to 2 weeks later: The problem resurfaces. In the middle of playing a round of Kerbal Space Program, the window encountered these strange pixels. After that, in quick succession, my entire GUI fell apart, and I had to reboot. Oddly enough, my computer hadn't frozen, because I could still talk to people (and hear them) on Teamspeak. So, as I said, I rebooted. Start up Minecraft, okay, nobody's on my favorite server, and it crashes again.
So, after all of these problems, I am finally requesting help. I'm at my wit's end; I've reinstalled everything, but it still doesn't want to work.
My computer specs:
OS: Fedora 20 (21 is still unstable)
Minecraft version: 1.7.10 (although all versions are affected)
Java Version: 1.7.77 and 1.8.25 (both break)
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce Quadro FX 2800M (1024M graphics memory)
Computer model: Dell Pricision M6500 (with two quad-core CPUs (installed by previous owner), among other things)
If any more information is needed, please ask and you shall receive.
And let me say again:
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT THE ENDER DRAGON WITH ENDER CRYSTALS, AS IT WILL MOST LIKELY DESTROY YOUR GAME, GUI, AND POSSIBLY YOUR SYSTEM.
You know, minecraft doesn't have 4x8 splotches. so theres two likely reasons. You are lying or were seeing things. Also, I find it strange why you dont have screenshots. I also find it strange why you don't play on 1.8 too.
I can provide screencaps if you need them (assuming my GUI doesn't crash before then). However, it will have to be of my entire desktop, considering that Minecraft crashes
Since I have to go soon, they will be posted ~4:00 P.M. CST on 1/21/15.
If they aren't, then you have every right to criticize me.
However, let me leave you something to think about: Why would I reinstall my entire system, and lose everything in the process, if I had done this as a hoax. What would be the point of doing this? Seriously, I'm a server owner (and the admin of another). I hate liars and cheaters as much as the next guy (and probably more; I've banned people outright for griefing).
I would launch into a whole big spiel, but I don't have the time. The pics will be up tomorrow. And please, don't shoot me down yet; I seriously need help with this problem.

So, it appears that I can no longer recreate the scenario, which means that either it was going to happen anyway, or it was under just the right conditions. I'd opt for the second, since this is a relatively new GPU.
However, should the "splotches" appear again, I will screencap them immediately.
For right now, however, I guess it would be appropriate to "nevermind" this post. Sorry for any trouble I caused you.
Also how do we know you deleted everything, you could be lying. Also usually server owners should have a minecraft forums account unless they have otherwise. And not being able to post screenshots is a bit fishy.
Im not saying you are a liar, as theres always a chance you are not. But it seems like it to me. if I am wrong, well then I apologise.
Well, I'm going to go ahead and mark this as resolved. It turns out that there are some known bugs with the nVidia drivers, and that was causing the problem. After switching to the Nouveau drivers, everything worked swimmingly.
Sorry for all the trouble, but I was starting to get desperate :P. I had noticed nobody else had my problem, and I just figured that that was because nobody was stupid enough to do what I did. However, it would appear that instead, it was a bug manifesting itself in a different way than usual (my dad apparently has the same problem at his work when logging into another server with a GUI, where the server can still show him doing everything, but he can't see what he's doing, but just didn't bother to tell me until recently).
And don't worry about all of the hostility, you had every right for it. I only wish that the skepticism shown here was applied to other areas in life as well (especially in UFO encounters).

This is either total rubbish or the absolutely worst case scenario mixed with luck
