Alright, let me start by saying I'm not new to using modded Minecraft clients at all. I started playing Minecraft back when we had to stuff everything in the Minecraft.jar itself by ourselves, so I've been around the block many times. I've played 22 different versions/releases of Minecraft over the years. I'm also the main troubleshooter for people who have PermissionsEx problems, over on the official PEX forum. I've written several guides for the plugin, and updated many of the wiki pages. And I've even written one (crappy, little) plugin myself for Minecraft 1.7.2 servers, one of which I still have in working order (and won't be touching now that I've completely nuked my client).
I have had? a working version of Minecraft 1.7.2 modded with Forge, then Liteloader, then all my favorite mods. I have had? a working version of Minecraft 1.7.10 modded with Forge, then Liteloader, then all of my favorite mods. I looked at the .minecraft folder and ... it was almost 12 GB with all the duplicated files (saves, schematics, etc).
So I moved the .Minecraft folder to my desktop and start from scratch, to see if making the 1.7.2 and 1.7.10 profiles from scratch would also result in less than 12 GB of Minecraft in the .minecraft folder.
And somewhere in the following, I nuked the entire ability to play Minecraft out of my computer:
I ran Minecraft, recreating the .minecraft folder.
I logged into Minecraft, creating my default profile (Stormbow) for the launcher.
I edited (Stormbow) to run 1.7.2 and got the base 1.7.2 files. Minecraft played just fine: I created a world; landed in Minecraft; exited the game.
I installed Forge for 1.7.2 (Forge-1.7.2-10.12.2.1121-installer.jar).
I installed Liteloader (Liteloader-installer-1.7.2-04.exe) and chained it to Forge exactly as I had done in my previous, working 1.7.2 / 1.7.10 installs.
I put all of the 1.7.2 mod files into the new .minecraft\1.7.2\mods folder (per installation instructions of each mod).
I edited the profile (Stormbow) to use the game directory of .minecraft\1.7.2, the liteloader version, and renamed the profile (Stormbow 1.7.2). (And, of course, saved the profile.)
I click Play on the launcher, and the launcher just vanishes. No error message. No crashing noises. No black screen. Nothing. It just disappears, javaw.exe removes itself from the task manager, and that's the end of the story.
Anyone have any ideas about what is going on here?
I deleted the new .minecraft folder (created above) and moved the old .minecraft folder back to %appdata% > Roaming. Still nothing. The launcher vanishes exactly as with the new install.
I can play 1.7.2 and 1.7.10, but I can't use any mods at all, in any mods folder, anywhere within the .minecraft folder now.
Last but not least, if you've changed Java versions, update your Profile(s) accordingly.
NAILED IT. THANK YOU!
(I knew it had to be something simple I was overlooking. The new install was trying to use Java 8. I pointed it at Java 7 with the executable option and I'm now looking at my modded 1.7.2 screen, from scratch!)

Congrats it fixed my hour long problem too! IxcainxI +1

Double-check your Mods folder. Perhaps instead of "[...]\.minecraft\1.7.2\mods" it might be
"[...]\.minecraft\versions\1.7.2\mods"
Readjust JVM Arguments. Sometimes mods don't like memory adjustments (eg. -Xmx8G -Xms4G).
See if you can still run a Vanilla profile (or standard launcher). This will at least narrow down where something went wrong.
Last but not least, if you've changed Java versions, update your Profile(s) accordingly.
Good luck.
