So I just downloaded and installed the newest version of minecraft (1.4.2 pre-release) and lost all of my content! I thought it would have simply updated the game, not deleted it and reinstalled it fresh.
Anyway, I had a semi recent backup of my world, and all my mods were backed up into a folder. But when I start minecraft now, the 'mods' option on the main screen is no longer there.
So I'm thinking I have to reinstall Forge now too. So I do that, the same way I did it for version 1.3.2 but my game kept freezing on the 'done loading' screen. I did delete the META-INF file btw.
I searched around on the forge forum, and found a new link to a new version of Forge - http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php/topic,2429.0.html (that's the post I found the link, it's at the bottom of the main post) and I downloaded and installed that (after re-installing a fresh version of minecraft 1.4.2) and now it gets stuck on the white 'mojang' screen. I did delete the META-INF file again...
So my question is this, since this new version of minecraft is only just released, does that mean Forge doesn't work for it? That there needs to be another version of forge that will be compatible with this version of minecraft? And that it will take a bit of time for that to be released?
Or is it something wrong on my end?
I am using a Mac running OS X 10.5, which is super old, I know, and notorious for not being compatible with new updates for things. Could that be my problem? Or is it simply that forge is not yet compatible with the latest release of minecraft?
Sorry I'm repeating myself, I just wanted to be thorough. Any help is greatly appreciated! Right now I don't know if I should play the unmodded version of 1.4.2 or the modded version of 1.3.2..
as far as i know minecraft forge is not updated to 1.4.2 with it being only a pre-release it can take a day to a few weeks to do a update on a mod like forge.
Forge 6.0.1 (build 330 and up - http://files.minecraftforge.net/) is for Minecraft 1.4.2.. Very few mods are updated for 1.4.2 yet. Mods for 1.3.2 do not work with 1.4.2.
Sorry I can't quote your guys responses properly, the option doesn't work when I click it. I'm a new member I don't know if that's something that is only available after I've been a member for a few days...
Anyway, I am totally cool with having to wait a while for mods to be updated, I completely understand that it takes a while.
But my question now is how do I install that newest version of forge that you linked me? The 6.0.1 version that is for Minecraft 1.4.2?
I can't view the youtube video I once used as a tutorial on how to install Forge (youtube is being finicky right now on this computer) so I'm not entirely sure how to do it.
Is it the same as when I installed the newest version of minecraft? Where I just copy the contents of the zip file directly into my minecraft.jar folder (the one in the bin in applications support, i'm on a mac..)?
Or do I do something else? I'm terrified of messing up my minecraft again since I've only just gotten 1.4.2 working again after messing with it earlier...
Thank you both for your responses, and thanks in advance for any more help you guys can give!

Yes, installation is exactly the same. Unpack Forge into your minecraft.jar, delete meta-inf. It sounds like you might appreciate MultiMC (http://forkk.net/MultiMC4/). Makes it easy to create multiple copies of Minecraft. You will have to fiddle it with a bit to get it work with a pre-release.. create an instance, then overwrite the minecraft.jar in that new location with the 1.4.2 minecraft.jar. It even has a Forge button.

Ok phew! It worked! I actually think the problem I had earlier was that not all the files were transferring from the zip file of Forge into the minecraft.jar file. Since I have hidden folders viewable, there's an annoying .DS_Store file in every folder, and it's not transferable, so when I selected all the items and dragged and dropped, it would only do the ones before it got to that ds store file. Lame :/
So now I've got forge working! Thank you so much!
Now to wait for my favorite mods to become available I've got to rebuild my world since my saved file was at least a week old and I did so much since then... *sadface*
Oh, one more quick question. My texture pack is having issues since the upgrade. I had to redownload the texture pack since I forgot to back it up, and its the John Smith one. But it needs MCPatcher for some of the graphics, and I lost that when I reinstalled minecraft.
I did manage to find the mcpatcher file online again (despite most links being dead ends) and I have it on my desktop, but everytime i try to execute the .jar file, it says it there was an error opening the minecraft.jar file ..
I know this is a completely different question than my original one, but do you think that it's not working because its not compatible with 1.4.2? And that my texture pack won't be fully working until mcpatcher is updated?
I really really loved that texture pack and will be super sad if I can't use it in this version

I'm not really a texture pack guy, but I do know that Forge and MCPatcher have issues. My understanding is that Forge and Optifine support texture packs the same way MCPatcher does. Go grab the Optifine 1.4.2 pre-release and see if that makes it work.. I'm guessing some textures will still be messed up if the pack isn't upgraded.

Alright I shall check out Optifine I know on the texture pack website it says it needs MCPatcher, and the files that aren't working in the game literally say 'need MCpatcher' as the image... I know it worked just fine when I had 1.3.2, and I had both MCPatcher and Forge at the same time. My problem is just I don't know why MCPatcher won't run right. I have a mcpatcher.xml file now in my minecraft folder (in application support) so I'm assuming it's doing *Something*
I also tried recompressing my minecraft.jar file so its not a folder anymore and that didn't work.
Ah well, I guess this is what I get when I jump the gun downloading something before I make sure I'm not going to mess up my game before I do it! LOL
Thank you for all your help and speedy responses! It's been greatly appreciated
For what it's worth, I loaded up the John Smith texture pack without any issue. There were some missing blocks, of course, since it's not up to 1.4.2 yet, but none of the textures said "need MCPatcher." No clue how you managed to get Forge and MCPatcher to ever work together, I didn't think it was possible.
Hey I'm trying to get MCPatcher to work for me. I refuse to use Forge because the creator is a complete to people, and he seems to be a generally rude human being so I'm over to MCPatcher - can't use it though (313 Copyfile error).
Just to clarify - do you need to install Modloader before installing Forge for 1.4.2? Some sites have that in their Forge installation instructions, but I read a thread discussing that Modloader was replaced by FML, so I figure those instructions may just be out of date?

Installation:
It is possible to install other mods straight from the patcher. This is a convenience feature only. The patcher only copies the mod files into minecraft.jar for you. It does not and cannot do anything to make other mods compatible with any version of the game other than the one they were written for.
In the main patcher window, click the Add (+) button.
Select the zip file containing the mod you wish to apply. In this example, we’ll use Link Removed.

No, Forge has it's own modloader built in.
