I've had this problem for several months and I'm at a loss. Minecraft doesn't connect at all... I get no news, no force update option, no anything but the option to play off line.
I thought it might be a firewall problem but that doesn't explain the lack of the news page or the lack of the force update option. I can shut my firewall off... and it's the same. I have no special settings on the modem that I screwed up... like port forwarding. MC never needed it. It doesn't matter if I use MC patcher to patch MC or not.
Connecting to the internet may help or downloading the 1.5.1 minecraft.jar
Thanks, but obviously I'm not having any trouble getting on line. I could do a manual installation but my real concern is why I'm not connecting in the first place.
Thanks Tedster... I made the .bat file... with no success. Is there any preferred name? I just named it minecraft.bat.
But you might be on to something. I installed Java 7 update 13 on Feb 4th. And that might be when I started to have problems. I don't update every time since none of the last few updates interest me and it's a pain to keep looking for new texture packs... etc.
I think I know what the problem was. I have TWO Minecraft Launchers.... one is a shortcut to the exe file in the .minecraft folder. This one doesn't connect. But I have an older standalone launcher... and this is the one that has room for Minecraft news etc. Problem is I thought this second one... from way back in Aug 2011, no longer in use.

Any ideas? I'm still back with 1.4.2.
Thanks!
