So I just got a new laptop and installed minecraft. I allocated a gigabyte of RAM and have been trying to play. It is eating a ton of CPU, 70-90%. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem and make minecraft run smoother? I have more RAM I can install onto it, and plan to, but I'm not sure if this would fix the problem. Thanks!

You don't need to allocate more RAM, Java will give Minecraft more RAM when it needs it. Like the previous poster said try using Optifine and see if it helps.
no, when minecraft hits 500mb of ram use, it runs out of memory.
That's weird, on all three of my computers Java will allocate more RAM to Minecraft whenever it needs it. I never got the out of memory error on any of them no matter what I do.
What model CPU is it? If you have a very weak CPU, then there's not much you can do. Otherwise, I'd suggest messing around with some settings in the menu.
minecraft is a cpu hog. 70% -90% CPU usage is actually quite normal. if youre not getting any actualy performance issues like lag screen tearing blocks not loking right and such. your minecraft is running fine. if you do get minecraft performance issues increase the allocated ram and it shooudl help . optifine can work too by allowing you to turn down or off certain aspects of the game not usually available to be changed by the default options ui. if you could post your PC specs and anything else minecraft related. that would be great to see what your computer is capable of. some thing with minecraft HD textures optifine and other things can be pretty resource intensive
