I'm assuming this is a bit more than the black splotchies that will be fixed in 1.4 (hopefully) - but seriously, no mods, no texture packs, just running around creative mode and this is what i see.
Curious if anyone else has these huge missing spots of terrain, or any idea what they could be?

This is nothing to worry about. All that is just caused by the rendering engine in Minecraft failing to catch up with the actual game. If you go near it though it shoukd go away, same with the lighting ( standing on it should fix it, not hovering over it).
Edit: you can also try updating you graphics drivers, I'm not sure where to go but you can ask in the computers, software, and technology section.

that is true, just a pain. is this supposed to be fixed in 1.4? Or is this something I need a faster CPU for?
Also, oCrapaCreepet, I'll try taking it off Far render - thanks for the tip
What you're seeing are errors in Minecraft trying to render the world, much like the black splotches but worse. These are pretty rare for most people, but just how rare depends on if the problem is in single or multiplayer. If it's in singleplayer, then your copy of Minecraft or your computer isn't rendering the game fully for some odd reason, which points to an unknown error from either one or both. If it's in multiplayer, then it's just a glitch server-side, probably caused by lag or the server not loading things correctly.
There's more to it as well for both situations. If the holes are visual only (the land is still there, just see-through), then it's a graphics problem. If the holes are actually pieces missing, then it might be a world generation error (the game made a broken world) or a chunk loading error (stuff got created incorrectly when you entered that area).
There's a few fixes to try for each situation: If it's visual only, try changing the render distance a few times and see if the holes disappear. If the holes are physical, then try walking a long ways away, then returning to see if reloading the chunk helps. If it's physical holes in multiplayer, disconnect and reconnect.
If that doesn't solve it, then I'm afraid you'll need someone else's help, since I'm no expert on this. Best of luck to you, usually render distance cycling or leaving and coming back fix these things.

Your computers fine its just the poor wrighting of the engines that run Minecraft. The Minecraft team at Mojang has plans to rewrite each engine before the modding api so we should be seeing many improvements in the future such as lighting glitches being removed.

Arrival of Darkness, Darker yet recognizable textures.
Yeah, here it is on Normal Render: (also, this isn't a function of me just spam re-creating worlds and having a bunch of folders named "new world" or some variation thereof...already made that mistake a month ago ><.)
I'll Take your suggestion Turbo, since it is just graphical in nature, and try to cycle through a few times. It only happens on single player for me.
I am assuming that you are getting more than 60fps, (if you are not plz tell me) I am also assuming that your display can only run at 60 Hz (again if not tell me). The problem is that you have tarring, you can fix this by turning on "v-sync" in you GPU's control panel

Home run. Found vsync on catalyst Control and it's working much better. thanks!

I would like to see this! ^^
we're not at 1.4 I thought...not til haloween?

This seems to only happen on the far render distance. But that may just be my system.
