It's pretty simple. If you place a block on top of obsidian on top of TNT and ignite the TNT, the TNT will try to explode anything in it's explosion decoration radius (the particles). When you place it, it should look like this;
O = Obsidian
T = TNT
B = Block (any)
[B]
[O]
[T]
Then when the TNT find a block in it's explosion radius, for example;
P = Particle
B = Block (any)
PPP
PBP
PPP
It will blow it up (if it hasn't already been). The particles will still come and it will still effect the area, but the TNT's main focus is to blow up all blocks that it's been told to blow up.

I once heard someone say you could fight off the Ender Dragon with sticks. He was the smartest person I have ever met.
