Hrm. Another idea is an item you can turn on/off that detects water/lava within 7x7x7 around you. If you're 3 away (2 blocks inbetween you) it beeps like once every second, while if there's just one wall inbetween you, it beeps rapidly.
I don't think water/lava will be much of a problem once the way they work is changed, especially if the sponge blocks coming out will soak it up in some way.
That aside, if there was some way to detect water/lava I think it would be best to be able to detect it with a block type in order to keep with the spirit of the game and also to not completely eliminate the risk of floods. It could be a block that is normally cloudy or grey, but which changes color when placed in or directly next to water (blue) or lava (red). This way you can see when water/lava is directly behind a wall similar to how you can see it through leaf blocks now. However, the gimmick for this block could be that it's impossible to actually put it on top of another block and instead it instantly takes the place of a currently existing block. That way if you plan to destroy a wall you could first replace a block with this Detector Block and if it doesn't change colors you can safely destroy it. This would also allow for a bit of Effort vs. Reward as it would of course be faster to just rapidly plow through walls, but taking the time to check panels with this block beforehand would guarantee that you never accidentally flood your base.
How about all the existing blocks just show those signs, i.e. traces of blue for water and red for lava? when directly next to them, kind of like a very slight leak of the water/lava through them.
I think that's what Wonmean meant...
I agree that when targeting a block it should flash glow blue/red (instead of white).
I think maybe just making it so when you're in remove mode, the block you have the crosshair over turns semitransparent rather than just grey so you can actually see what's behind it might be a nice easy fix.
For the pre release it could just be something we all have, but after the release, I guess it could be something you buy.
My response remains the same for this concept as it has been in the past... I think blocks should leak water/lava particles as someone hammers on them with a pickaxe, if there's water/lava on the other side. Warning without giving it all away.
Also, damn, this is another impressive necro-post. over a year old! I didn't even know there were suggestions from that long ago.
Well, you can hear moving water through stone now. I've used it in the past to locate caves. Of course, it's impossible to flood anything now, without a lot of hard bucketwork.
Sound is a much better solution than an extra tool. Damp walls would be nice, but I'm not sure it's really worth it. Also, generally stone isn't exactly permeable, so... wouldn't get damp from water on the opposite side.

Quite right. but it WOULD start leaking as soon as you started hammering cracks into it.
Imagine. Never flood your tunnel again! I'd buy them.
