I don't think Mojang has ever said anything about having them in game, I do believe dual weilding may have been mentioned.
With the 1.6 Mob update, hoping that there are some more baddies to fight I think a shield would be a great way to help survive in the ever growing and changing Minecraft world.
There could be different tiers following the armor guideline ranging from basic to heavy.
Wood, Iron, Gold, Diamond
All shields could be craft with materials already available in game, and could follow a similar pattern.
Say you want a wooden shield, make the pattern in a crafting table (say its a square) and have leather be inner layer, rinse repeat for other shield types.
The shield would obviously add some extra AC, and then you could enchant it with the same enchants available for armor.
Or the shield could have extra protection from 'missiles', blasts, and melee instead of having ac. Depending on the type of shield these effects will be added as the materials become greater or they will scale in strength.
A more 'simple' way could be to have one type of generic shield that could be enchanted, dyed, and have heraldry (think how the picture frames work).
What do you guys think? Would shields be a good addition?
Yes please, more intense PVP. I would like it so you can hang them up on walls, like mobhead-ish. Also, dual-wield. How about there is a seperate slot for a shield in the armor slots next to your player skin when you press 'E'.
Make them something to tank with, a lot of pvpers just bring swords. It's hilarious when some guys click in 1 direction unable to hit you, because that's how he plays the game, you never have to deal with zombies jumping in circles around you.. Untill the hacks come on that is, then he just clicks in 1 direction and you die.

Now the only thing that slabs are useful for is decoration.
One good thing about shields is that in custom maps you can give tanks shields, increasing their defense without increasing their attack. At the moment, you have to give them a wooden sword, which also allows them to waste their defense in favor of temporarily increased damage. Also, blocking you notice does not reduce a sword's durability. So shields, would take durability damage and not dish any damage. I also think you should have to right click to activate your shield, else it's just idle at your side. I don't think it should give any movement speed reduction, as, unlike a sword, you can simply attack with it. I like the idea of reducing knockback, but I think the idea of a directional shield that blocks 100% of damage is bad. OP and can get really annoying. I also think that sword blocking should not be removed, just be nerfed (Like, 25% damage reduction rather than 50%).

I'd like shields to be added to the game to make it pvp seem cooler like the rest of you, but I'd honestly prefer them making Resistance potions brewable also.
Have you got any evidence at all to support this, or a you just making a suggestion?

Shield tiers are as such. Wood/Leather/Iron/Gold/Iron Reinforced Diamond
Why Iron Reinforced Diamond? well Diamonds arent that great at protecting something. but they do cut things well.
Blocking Mechanics - Blocking normaly will reduce 60/65/70/65/85% of damage (gold and leather block for the same) When Blocking you cannot, Swing Your Sword or other weapon, Jump, or move fast. While holding your shield up you CAN do the following, Shield Bash/Combo, Shield Throw, Or Shield Charge.
Shield Bash/Combo - While blocking you can use your shield to bash or throw a combo of attacks at your enemy
Shield Throw - Ok you may be saying "What in the name of god is he thinking?" well folks Shield Throwing is an enchant only ability. when you hold Sneak + Block you can left click to throw your shield if it has Shield Throw on it.
Shield Charge - If you Sprint and hold your shield up you can go into a Shield Charge. Shield Charge reduces your all around damage by 45% and that goes up if you have Shielding Charge enchant on your shield. Or if you have Furious Charge you move 20% faster with shield charge on but lose 10% all around protection from the 45% you cannot have Shielding Charge and Furious Charge on the same shield.
Perfect Blocking - If you put up your shield at the EXACT moment an attack comes you can reduce it down by 90% with Perfect Guard on your shield you can negate 100% with a perfect block but that Enchant can ONLY be gotten by a book dropped from the Wither.
Enchants:
Perfect Guard - Makes Perfect Blocking negate All damage Requires 30 enchant levels and can be added to any shield. Only obtainable from a Wither dropping it.
Furious Charge - Makes Shield Charge 20% faster but reduces damage reduction of a Shield Charge by 10%. Can be gotten from a minimum of level 20 enchant.
Shielding Charge - Makes Shield Charge negate 65% Damage but makes it 10% Slower. Can be gotten from a minimum of level 20 enchant.
Guardian Stance - Increases Damage reduction of a Shield by 5/10/15/20/25% Can be gotten to level V and minimum enchant get is level 1 Enchant. Bonus for V level Reduces Knockback by 50%

I really LOVE that Idea! Shields would be a great addition to the game, especially for people who like to pretend Medieval play, or medieval servers. Nice suggestion.
I can see a use to this, but please, I BEG you, no more dual-weildig idea. These would be insanely OP, at least with shields. Having to change between a sword and a Shield would give a much more strategic and reaction time-dependent. For example, you're into a quite harsh batle. Suddenly, you see an opponent charging towards you. You have to quickly change to your shield, block the incoming barrage of attacks, then hit him with your shield, and change fast to your Sword before he comes back, and beat him. This would also make PvP battles actually last some time, and be fair, instead of the present "I'll just go ahead and steal this guy from his valuables in 2 seconds. Why? Because he has Leather Armor and a Stone Swords, and I've got FULLY ENCHAHNTED DIAMOND GEAR MOTHERER!"-style "battles".
Oh, and two more things: 1st, Wood Shields should take heavy damage from weapons enchanted with Fire Aspect or Flame, and 2nd, there should be a new enchantment for Swords, called Piercing. Those would have increased damage against shield-using players. Cannot be combined with Knockback (for some reason)
I agree with this, it is what I meant in my earlier idea.
I think you should instead of using them as armor, you could keep it in you hotbar to hold out when needed.
