I am slightly surprised that i could not find a post about something like this already here(i woke up thinking about this and had to get it out of my head]
In it's simplest form, the lock block is a block which "locks" a 19x19x19 area around it[9 blocks in each direction], preventing anybody except the user names specified on it form editing those blocks. One way i have imagined lock blocks could be implemented would be in a sign form.
Sign Block Performance:
*When Dropped, it automatically has creator's name on it [so that creator can then have permission to edit it]
*more names can be added [so that users who mutually share a space in upcoming infdev multiplayer can edit their shared home]
*if a person's name is not on the list, they would not be able to edit any blocks within bounds of the protected space
* possibly made same as a sign, but iron instead of wood?
*Code would be fairly similar to user rank check on creative multiplayer, but would check a player's name parameter rather than rank

take for example the following screenshot
here, where the oddly desaturated gray sign is, we will assume is the lock block. this lock block would allow sparkky, Equ1n0x, and Jack to edit the space in the box, but not another person, for example a griefer named asdfasdfasdf
UseFullness:
-Prevent griefing in multiplayer
-allow shared shelter without risking damage to your structures

SO LONG AS it is made that you can still edit entities, go through doors (possibly locked) and open chests, also, you shouldn't be able to place a block on a chest at all, and a chest shouldn't be able to go under a block (it acts like a super-lock) And if we get locked doors, they should have to be in the vicinity of a land-claimed area, and pickable, so should locked chests.
@super, lock block i was thinking was more of what seems to already be called a land claim, rather than a bolt-socket type lock, though as you said a lock on doors or chests would be neat but can already be done with simple blocks

Only want claim flags that keep mobs from despawning.
If full locked areas are implented, it would pretty much ruin the game, and I would be forced to build giant penises in locked areas right infront of everyones bases, to illustrate that point.

I did consider they could be used to grieve, and also intersections of lockblocks.
solution i came to is that you cannot put a logic block within 38 blocks of another player's claim block UNLESS that claim block also has your name on it

either the edge of my territory is going to be filled with penises, or my front lawn will be. THIS is why I will stick to single player.
