The basic idea of packs is to increase the realism of mob behavior, promote traveling in groups, and discourage blindly rushing into danger.
When a monster comes within, say, 5 blocks of another monster, it has a chance of forming a pack with that monster. A monster is more likely to team up with a monster of the same species. Once this happens, one of the monsters becomes the "Leader" of the pack, and the other becomes a "Follower". More monsters can join the pack at any time as long as they come near the leader, but they will automatically become followers.
Some rules for pack behavior:
- Followers will never leave a 20 block radius of their leader. If they do from being stuck or lagging behind, they will no longer be in the pack and must rejoin it.
- If the leader comes near another leader of another pack, they have a chance of joining. This creates a sub-pack, whose significance will be explained later.
- If the leader dies, the pack is disbanded. If it is a sub-pack, it is disbanded but the pack it is part of retains its members.
Attacking
- If a follower sees you, they will attack you until they...
a) Take a hit
:cool.gif: Stray near the edge of their leader's 20-block radius
Once one of the above happens, they will make a beeline for the leader. If they manage to get back to their pack leader, the leader will call all their followers to them. This includes any sub-packs that may be under that leader. If this works up the pack "pyramid", you might have the entire island after you.
- If a leader sees you, they will call all their followers back then proceed to attack you.
- Followers of a pack have a chance of either attacking you normally, or pathfind to the spot the opposite direction of you and the same distance away from the leader. Diagram:
Wouldn't it just snowball until you have either all the enemies in a given map on the other side of said map and you never see them, or every single enemy in the map camping your house/fortress/undersea laboratory/whatever?
+1. I hate having to search for enemies on indev when I need stuff. If you kill the leader some of the enemies should die.
This would make for an interesting wolf mob!

I gave this thread a -1, its horrible and the worst idea I will ever lay my eyes on. Simply the sight of this idea made me vomit. I had to scrub my eyes with soap to feel cleansed of this disgusting idea. I hope you feel ashamed of yourself op.

I am now as ashamed of myself as I can possibly be. I shall cut off my hand to prevent myself from posting such a ridiculous suggestion ever again then clean up the mess I have made with my remaining appendages.
I for one like this idea, it's almost like a squad. But sidenote, if you are spotted by a follower alone, you would want to haul ass or get a bow out, unless you want a pack of mobs on you. +googol plex (Don't listen to fire, hes a meanie pants :tongue.gif:)
I think it would be better for the packs to fight amongst each other. If two leaders met, the two groups would then fight each other until one of the leaders die. The remaining living mobs would then join the victorious party.
This would help prevent pack sizes from getting too large, and would be helpful to a player if he could somehow lead one pack to another.
Further, perhaps there could be a limit to the number of mobs in a pack, just to ensure that numbers don't get crazy.
As far as intelligence goes however, I would like a mob that can recognize a wall and break through it. Perhaps zombies could slowly eat away at a wall of anything weaker than stone, but only while in the presence of a player.

Geez, I have a warning rating of [2] and you have a spotless record, WHO THE HELL IS RUNNING THIS PLACE!!!
Hmm...
You could paralyse a whole group of monsters by tossing the leader into a hole...
Otherwise, a good idea, but it maybe would be better if it only one sort of monsters would have this nature, say, the creepers
Another problem: if a pack has enough time to form, you could be attacked by a bunch of hundreds of monsters, which wouldn't be very awesome :biggrin.gif:

EDIT: Oh, I see what you're doing. Why would you do that?
Well apparently when I made this exact suggestion, the people who posted the same comment in my thread were serious, so yes, -1
