Magic Staff:
Crafting -
2 planks in a diagonal with a stone or block of your choice in the corner, can be either of the 2 top corners. Why planks and not sticks? Because planks carry their wood type attribute with them, sticks do not. This can be useful in expanding the type of staff to many other varieties or at the very least just making it look different than just a single weapon look. 2 Sticks would make for a single color and style scheme... 2 planks however can change the color, style, AND attributes so as to be able to expand the idea to a large multitude of combinations if it was wanted.
For example: One could have multiple variations of a stick staff, if they topped it with, red stone, gold, emerald, glass, a potion, fire charge, an arrow, iron, gold, or any number of other things as well... but if you make it from planks instead... you ALSO can have:
Oak staff
Jungle Wood Staff
Dark Oak Staff
Birch Staff
Acacia Staff...
etc
etc
etc.
So planks instead of sticks... or perhaps you could have both... Maybe a basic staff would be 2 sticks with a topper... then to improve on it you could put that staff in the bottom of the table and put 4 planks and 2 pieces of glass or something to encase the basic staff thereby making it a "Great Staff" or something. Might be interesting to come up with all kinds of neat ways to do it for different purposes.
(Ya'll who want to, please make suggestions for different ways to craft and what to craft it from, as well as how this crafting would effect what, below).
DURABILITY:
I'm not even going to try to play with this one right now... I want to hear the community's ideas on this one, keeping the ABOVE parameters of crafting about it in mind of course. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THIS IS NOT A STRIKING WEAPON, THIS IS A RANGED SPELL CASTER WEAPON.
I think however:
Gold 3
Wood 5
Iron 7
Diamond 10
USES:
Yes I am well aware we have the bow... but it needs some love and a few new features on it too... and not everyone wants to chuck spells via bows and potion bottles... quite frankly a spell caster mechanic tied specifically to a staff would be nice to have for those players who like using one of those for ranged attacks instead of a bow... not everyone wants to be a sword swinger or bow sniper... some folks want to kill zombags with spells.
Could be used in various ways like casting fireballs, launching acid, raining fire or lightning down from the sky, causing plants to grow, changing the day night cycle at will, causing lava to appear, setting fire to something, exploding stuff, summoning mobs that are tied to your will temporarily, freezing stuff, putting out fires, casting poison or harming, opening holes in the ground that close back up after a few seconds, causing entities to fly up into the air so they get fall damage, teleporting enemies, flinging things away from your position like a shot-put... all kinds of neat stuff.
Maybe it could be so that if you put a specific ore in the tip like red stone it would do more damage and like glowstone it would do damage over time faster. Perhaps you could put a potion in it to be used as ammunition for it. Perhaps if you put a fire charge in it, it adds fire damage to whatever attack you put in it. Lots of possibilities...
This is the basis of the idea... what do you all think? Would such a weapon have a use? What in the game mechanics we have now and those that are upcoming could it break? What should it have, what should it not have? What crafting materials should it be made of? How would the crafting recipies go?
Any ideas at all? What I mainly want to know is... do YOU all think this would BENEFIT the game in any way? HOW would it benefit the game, and HOW would it be a detriment? What are the pros and cons of it?

Never steal from SGT Funyoun... I'll TNT your entire world to bedrock... one blast at a time... while I make you and your Villager mob family watch from the netherworld.
I think the staff should work like this if you don't mind me suggesting:
The material of the staff just effects it's durability. And in it's base form the staff does little to no damage and only works as a melee weapon. The real assistance of the staff comes with enchantment.
Here are the bonus enchantments that MAY appear alongside the elemental enchantments:
-Unbreaking
-Looting
-Knockback
-Bane of Arthropods
-Smite
While there's no guarantee any of those will appear on your weapon, there is a 100% chance of one of these enchantments appearing, note: the farther down the list, the more rare the enchantment:
Elemental enchantments:
-Wind Staff: knocks foes far away with a single punch.
-Fire staff: Beware the fireballs launched by this staff.
-Ice staff: Freezes water and slows mobs.
-Earth staff: An AOE effect around the player that slows and harms enemies.
-Healing staff: Shoot another player to give them a single heart of health. Hold right click to heal one's self one heart.
-Staff of Movement: Shoots ender pearls.
-Staff of protection: An AOE effect attack that gives temporary resistance of damage to any player in close range.
-Staff of lightning: Useless underground, but above, it smites foes with a devastating bolt of lightning from the heavens.

I like your ideas! Very nice. So would you say that different varieties of Wood (maybe even including Chorus Plant from The End) would affect the variety of powers a staff can have?
*Some Tweaks though:
ALL STAFFS NEED AMMO...
- Wind Staff - Chucken Feathers for Ammo maybe?
- I think an Ice Staff freezing water might be OP, SLOWING a mob I can see, but having a way to get ice on tap without the effort of exploring for it... no thank you. Maybe a *TIME SLOWING* Staff that slows down whatever the spell bolt touches. Maybe Ice and Snow for Ammo.
- Healing Staff... uses healing potions for ammo.
- STAFF OF MOVEMENT - Shoots Ender Pearls... Uses Ender Pearls as Ammo... Fires Ender Pearls twice as far and with a velocity 10 times Faster than the player can physically throw them... and can be used when using Eyes of Ender to Teleport OTHER entities to a random spot on the map.
- Staff of Protection - Iron Ingots for ammo.
- Staff of Lightning - Blocks of obsidian for ammo... maybe... can't think of anything better... anyone have a better idea here?

Well, this suggestion is similar but very different.
Similar because suggest staffs, but different because her suggested powers and mechanics of obtaining are not the same.
There were lots of suggestions about staffs in the past, I would not say that this suggestion is duplicate...
Thank you... I was also not able to find any within the last several months either.
I still think this is a good idea personally... Helpful suggestions like Lord_McAlister's are most appreciated. I do believe we have established that this thread is not a duplicate or copy thread.

Nah, I think just durability will do.
Also the frost-walker enchantment does this.
Healing staff should just heal, but if it must, make the ammo apples.
Ender pearls are possible if you've been to the deep end they're easy to get.
