I have been working on a rather large 'concept' document for MineCraft, and its turning out to be great. I thought I would share a little something I have included in my concept. I hope to post the full concept within a week or so... but for now Enjoy these pics. I am using 'photobucket' to host these images... hope it works on minecraft forums.
Advanced Workbench
The first one is of a large advanced workbench. It would formed in game by placing a second workbench next to the first. And like chests these two would combine. The new workbench allows for advanced crafting, which in turn has more space for the player play with. The new space is 3x6, I was initially trying to do a 5x5, but found it hard to create a decent texture that would work- while keeping to the 16x16 pixel format of MineCraft.

The Next concept image
The Second image, is of a large or adv workbench. This workbench is still under construction, but it uses the idea of combining different metal ores to create a new hybrid metal... such as copper+tin=bronze. I have a large list of new metals in my concept document... But, for now see the "work-in-progress" of the adv workbench.
Here is an in-game concept screen shot I made of the advanced workbench.
Well that is all I have for now. Let me know what you guys think.
I Like this idea. I dont know what you could use the adv workbench for maybe furniture or something, but the adv furnace could be used for combining metals like iron and coal for steel.
lol if you want to see an idea of what you could craft on something like this search up 6x6 and find the name Nath99 (ik this is 3x6) cause I'm not re-posting/editing the idea

one of the ideas I had when I made this was long swords and long bows. Since reading the 2x2 crafting posts and seeing his ideas for shields, I would like small shields to be made with the normal 3x3 crafting grid, and large shields to be made with this larger grid.
Long Swords would be able to attack at a slightly longer range and be slightly stronger. Long bows would of course have greater range. Damage I would not increase by increasing bow size, instead use multiple types of arrows.
Thanks for the posts. Check out some of my other work here on these forums. If you like this post you might like the cooking range or blacksmith ideas.
This type of thing has been suggested many times, however almost every time (if not all) they suggest 4x4 or some type of square crafting grid.
I like the style you went with here, and the work you put into it. I support the workbench, though i don't know about the forge.
For the larger workbench you would build much more complicated or larger items, such as multiple-block objects, like a 2x2 door or a large gate. Perhaps some powered boats, multi-person boats and minecarts, etc. etc.
for the forge, see my blacksmith post. It expands upon its use as well as some other stuff.
Also note I changed it slightly between this post and the blacksmith one... The blacksmith post is newer
I personally don't think there's much to be gained by a bigger crafting grid. But on the topic of making a larger workbench, this gave me a idea... Mayhaps the larger workbench would have like 3-5 holding spots? This would give temporary storage to use when you have a full inventory, and you wouldn't have to cycle between a workbench and a chest.
