First off, in my own opinion I think that water should be improved by a certain degree to a realistic value before minecraft leaves beta.
Now, I'm sure you've seen threads like this before, so I won't get too deep.
Sources that are not oceans or seas will drain out the water and balance to fill in all spaces, until each water block it can reach is at the same level. This may takes a few minutes. If there isn't enough water to fill in everything even in the smallest level of water, it will go as far as it will at the shortest water level.
Seas will immedietly start to flood everything. Since it doesn't need to balance out much like the other water sources, it will flood much faster, filling in every small space possible it can reach.
These ideas are none to origonal, and I notice this.
Pipes would be simple. Ideally, If an open side of a pipe block is facing water in the sea, it will continue to the pipe into the other side. If the other side is blocked off, no water will flow. If there is a pipe block on the other side, it will continue to the other pipe block, and so on. They would connect similar to rails, and turn automaticly to fit into eachother. Now, what makes Pipes special is water coming out of the people will behave like water physics now. Water will go out for 8 blocks, with the pipe the source block. This revolutionary addition will allow many mob traps to survive and live on.
And if the pipe is connected to a limited source, each block of water will run through the pipe for two minutes, so a lake would last a few months in minecraft time depending on the lake.
I know similar things to this have been suggested, but this is a simple solution to compromise having more realistic physics and water traps still working (YAY FOR SCIENCE)
And, there is a mod for this out. http://www.djoslin.info/finiteliquid.php
Natural waterfalls work by having a river go off a cliff, and the river leads to an ocean. If a river runs to an ocean, the waterfall would run forever.
Guess what. I've seen that thread.

Pop!
This is different.
The the part about the finite water is basicly restating what has already been said. The pump is what differs this from other ideas.
We have a search button on this forum; it works quite well. I use it all the time to find older obscure topics and more regularly suggested topics such as this one, I strongly suggest you begin doing the same. This prevents what we call spam (this topic).

P.S. Lava will flow just like water.
Natural waterfalls never really run dry.
This would ruin those waterfalls after a couple of hours.
Goddamn do I hate this name z_z
