Ok so first things first I have look and yes some of my ideas have all ready been suggested But from what I could tell not all have and not all are the same.
Second I was just going over many ideas for painting in my head and I decided, "hey lets let the forum users decide" so here they are.
Third (Do'h) if you have an idea or change you think would be beneficial go for it and I'll see if it would work.
Fourth (...I need to think more) I will add pictures and if you have pictures go ahead and comment them, you will get credit.
Paintings!
Everyone who has used a painting knows it can be of an annoyance to get the painting you need, or that the paintings are getting "old" and over used. So here are my ideas on a few (potentially) ideas for paintings of which some will be incompatible with others or will work well with others.
-Modular Paintings
Modular paintings (as I'm calling it) is the idea that when you place a painting you get a 1x1 painting. By placing a painting above or below would create a 2x1 painting and so on.
-Pros
it would be easier to get the size painting you want.
-Cons
might have to re work the painting recipe (remove the sticks from the corners, get more from crafting).
would be more difficult to get the desired painting.
would have to individually knock off each section.
Not bad, but I have an Idea to improve it. Simply right clicking will only give you 1x1. How about as your placing it, if you hold down right click while your placing it, depending on where you move your crosshair from one place to the other, it'll make a painting within that grid.
Change Paintings(some wording along the lines of that)
have an item like a paint brush used as a tie in item, use dye, or straight up use your hand to select the painting you want. I.E. you have a 1x1 painting, you click with said item and a gui appears with the compatible painting types (other 1x1) and the same applies for the other sizes (2x1, 3,4 4,4, Ect.) and if more paintings are added, have the ability for the gui to have a "favorite paintings" section
A guy named Dr. Troll created a suggestion similar to this but it applies when placing \/
Paint brushes would be an item "potentially" in use for other suggestions
I will not list pros and cons because it is not my idea.
More Paintings
Title says it all submit painting ideas and I will also have some here.
Hopefully these worked
16x16
-Pros
More paintings, not as much repetition with paintings
-Cons
harder for painting selection
User Paintings
would allow players to upload their paintings onto the server or on single player, use ones from images on their selected device
-Pros
Unlimited choice of paintings
Wallpaper?!
-Cons
the dark corner of the community who aren't very nice or child friendly (use your brain)
could cause a server overload if too many painting are uploaded (fix for this, allow only a certain number of paintings by users making it so they must change or delete some to add new ones)
My final thoughts
So there are most of my ideas/ the nexus. The painting easel was similar enough to one of my ideas but as said at the top, all ready is a thing. So I just put a link to fic18's suggestion page(he had the idea first{well posted it first}).
Constructive criticism is highly advised because my thoughts are not always together very well.
any photos that are child friendly that would help will be highly appreciated.
I'd maybe suggest that custom paintings are only visible to the player who placed it. They choose a pre-existing size for their image and it will automatically get rescaled to fit the constraints. To all other players, they just see a default, standard painting. It's the only way people wouldn't be able to abuse paintings on servers and have a hall of tits for all to see.

This sounds nifty, though nothing else in Minecraft is really like that. Though I suppose nothing else in Minecraft has a variable size, either.
The idea in general sounds great, though I think you may want to clean it up. It's a little hard to read.

Yeah would fix the recipe change problem, and the individual knock painting off. would make it even harder to get the wanted painting though. add add it as a potential fix.
My version so it is as easy as possible to handle painting:
- More Available Paintings:
Paintings are grouped in "sets".
For example the default paintings would consist of all those super-low-resolution paintings that you can barely see what they are supposed to be, with the kind of obsession over death themes and video game refences for almost all of them painings ugly or half-assed, would be the default set. Servers would be able to easily add more sets. A player that wants a particular painting would have to send the image to the server admin first,
Basically, a paintings folder, with 1 subfolders for putting the paintings for each there, and 1x1, 1x2, etc., sub-subfolders for the various paintings sizes.
- Painting placement:
A painting will always use the block side that is right-clicked to count as it's bottom left corner. For the up and to the right directions, a painting will always try to be the maximum size possible. If you want a more limited size then you just place torches or whatever, then place the painting. Paintings can't stack so even another part of another painting will count as "blocking" the areas that a new painting is able to occupy.
- Painting selection :
When placed, the painting will be the last used painting of the current painting set for that size. For example if you place a pinocchio (1x2), then place a taco (1x1), then when you place another 1 wide x 2 tall painting, it will again be a pinocchio.
Then you scroll the mouse wheel (scrolling the mouse button #3) with crosshair over the painting to cycle between all the possible choices for that current painting set and current size. Note that this changes the painting ONLY if the player would be able to actually break the painting (server protection plugins, etc.)
Pressing Shift + Mouse button #3 while crosshair is over a painting will "switch" to the next painting set (and also changes the painting to the last painting used used in that set for the painting's size), this is a cycling thing so it will return to the default set when trying to shift+Button3 "past" the last defined painting set. Shift is needed here to avoid switching set by mistake while simply wanting to scroll to choose which plaiting to place.
With the combination of painting sets plus limiting the choices to only those for current painting size, plus allowing easy selection directly on the placed painting by scrolling, you could have 100+ paintings yet still easy to select without needing a GU or swamping the player with too many choices at the same time.

Sounds pretty good, but most server admins really don't respond (From experience).

That is a "Mojang" fix to the problem but I still like it, but would prefer Modular paintings.
- Painting selection :
When placed, the painting will be the last used painting of the current painting set for that size. For example if you place a pinocchio (1x2), then place a taco (1x1), then when you place another 1 wide x 2 tall painting, it will again be a pinocchio.
Yeah but not all the times I would like to get the same painting
Then you scroll the mouse wheel (scrolling the mouse button #3) with crosshair over the painting to cycle between all the possible choices for that current painting set and current size. Note that this changes the painting ONLY if the player would be able to actually break the painting (server protection plugins, etc.)
Pressing Shift + Mouse button #3 while crosshair is over a painting will "switch" to the next painting set (and also changes the painting to the last painting used used in that[/i] set for the painting's size), this is a cycling thing so it will return to the default set when trying to shift+Button3 "past" the last defined painting set. Shift is needed here to avoid switching set by mistake while simply wanting to scroll to choose which plaiting to place.
I don't ever think altering with holding shift is a good idea, trust me I know how people could abuse this. Lure player to walkway over death pit. have it surrounded by paintings. Snipe him. So if you have your sword or pick out and your holding shift to prevent falling, it would be slightly more difficult. Very unlikely but possible.
With the combination of painting sets plus limiting the choices to only those for current painting size, plus allowing easy selection directly on the placed painting by scrolling, you could have 100+ paintings yet still easy to select without needing a GU or swamping the player with too many choices at the same time.
With the change paintings you can only change the painting to the other compatible paintings (1x1 only changes to 1x1, ect.)
For the "too many choices" what the player can do is add this favorite to the favorite section and the "Favorites" will only show up if it is compatible with the painting your trying to change. (You favorite a 3x3 painting then go to change a 1x1 painting. It will not show up in your favorites unless you are trying to change a 3x3 painting)
As much fun as the "User Paintings" would be, they'd be terrible in the long run, as people would show off vulgar and inappropriate things. The rest of the ideas are pretty good, but I'm not that biggest fan of making a paint brush, as Mojang could just make it where you can change paintings without needing it.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/suggestions/80659-choosing-which-painting-you-want-to-place
-Pros
Easier painting selection
-Cons
uses up dye/durability (because you can already change painting free of cost)
Painting stand and easel
not my idea but I think it fits into this painting suggestion "Nexus"

Pretty cool idea for the "Modular Paintings" i would really like this addition since plantings are a pain in the butt.
