First give it some wheat. Then, once its mouth is open right click it with an empty hand to ride it. While your riding it, give it some more wheat and you should see hearts. It's now tamed and you can put a saddle on and control it.

It won't let me control it...

First. Feed a horse wheat. When it's mouth opens, right click the horse with an empty hand and continue to feed it wheat. In order to know that it is yours, hold down space. If the would-be XP bar goes up, then you can press e to put a saddle on it as well as armor.

When I get on one of the tamed horses I cannot see the health bar or the jump bar, just my own health bar. Is this a bug or am I being stupid?

Nvm i fixed mine I don't know what it was

What I did (it's 1.6) is keep on trying to ride the horse. Eventually, it becomes friendly and you can access the inventory, and you can put saddles and armor on.

I don't understand? I continue to right click the horse with wheat and it won't let me feed it, only ride it. I want to refill it's health but it won't let me. It's now close to dead.

its not working for me. I'm giving it wheat, then hopping on it then giving it more wheat but it lifts its body up and I slip of. Its easier to ride pigs.
