What I used:
Stone Slabs
Stone Bricks
Nether Fence
Black, and White wool
Stone Stairs
I didn’t count the number of each block I used because this is creative mode, and not survival.
(Black and White wool is used to help you with placing blocks, and will be deleted later)
First things first, you need to scout an area of where you want your bridge to be. For this particular location, there is A LOT of water, so my first step was making the beginning and end of the bridge so I knew when to stop building. You don’t have to copy me exactly, and this is just what I did to make my bridge. I first watched videos on YouTube on how to make them, and I decided to make one of my own, and take screen shots of what I did. This is also 1.6 (The Horse Update)
20 blocks tall (start and ending posts)
5 block space between starting posts. From the bottom count 6 blocks up to start the area where the “cables” will be.
From the start of the bridge, until you reach the end, place stone slabs from that 6th block. After both sides are completed, now do an every other block and double it up.
After that is done, on the blocks that you doubled up, use the fence and go up until the top of the bridge posts, and each time you start making new “cables” use one less, until you are at one, and then go back up until you reach the top of bridge.
-----SIDENOTE: MAKE SURE THE FENCE TOUCHES THE STONE SLABS BEFORE YOU MAKE THE CABLE SUPPORTS, OTHERIWSE YOU’LL HAVE FLOATING CABLES-----
If you use my measurements, your first set of “cables” will be 13 blocks high, and each set you take one away, going down to 1, and then back up to 13. You may have to extend or shorten your bridge to make sure the sets of cables equal 13 blocks high at the beginning and the end.
Once done with that, at the top of each set of “cables” place a stone slab, and then proceed to make stairs over and over again until you’re done with the “cables” Doing this will take the most time, as it took me about six hours, but my bridge is also 350 blocks long.
When you get to the point of where the “cables” are the tallest, in this particular bridge it’s the 13th block, you can add a leg that goes into the water so that it doesn’t look like a floating bridge, in my case, I made the leg 3 blocks wide showed here with the black and white wool.
When you’re done with the support system, you’ll be able to walk up and down them as if they were stairs, shown here.
Just for some added decoration, I added glowstone surrounding the legs in the water.
Next step is for the road to travel across the bridge, you can use whatever block that you want. I’ll be using Stone Bricks, and then I’ll place black wool on top of it, to make it look like a road, I have a slight OCD problem so if I can help it, everything I build is symmetrical. So for that to happen, I needed to place 2 layers of Stone Bricks underneath the Stone Slab (shown here) and then I used them to make the foundation for my road. Again, the black and White wool is just used to help you place your blocks, it will not be in the final build (other than in the road)
This is what the bridge looks like with the foundation.
In order to get up to the bridge, I needed to add stairs, but you can do whatever you like better. Since I don’t like to see the sides of the steps, I expended the beginning and ending legs by two, so instead of 3 blocks long, they are now 5 blocks long.
For the road, I used black wool, and for the white lines, I used 3 blocks of white wool, with a single space of black wool, shown here.
For the finishing touch, I just added a little cover on the top of the leg just to make it look nicer, shown here.
Here’s the final picture of what my bridge looks like.
I hope this was easy to follow, this was my first "How to..." post, if I get enough feedback, I may make more of them, I kind of enjoyed making this, it took me about 12 hours total. Over a two day period.
Thanks, I like it! You should try making the cables more shaped tough, since it doesn't really add the hanging feeling right now, except for that its definately a good build and a clear tutorial!
Any ideas on how to do that? I looked and looked, and found nothing on suspension bridges.
Thank you for the kind words, I've been nervous that pro MC players would totally make me feel like it's the worst thing ever.
I agree with the above comment. It's definitely a decent tutorial, but what you built doesn't look "suspended". More like metal bars on stilts. Give it a small curve in the top slabs - use paint if you are terribad like me - and provide shots of the paint drawings for the cables.
Any ideas on how to do that? I've looked and looked for suspension bridges help, and I came up with nothing. I like your words "metal bars on stilts" It made me laugh, and I'm not sure why.
