Honestly I'm loving how this is turning out. So precise of a recreation of the Azeroth world it is, despite some of the awkward building positions (the cathedral in Stormwind being a pretty good example :P) and the giant file size of the world itself. I'm intrigued to see how the Outlands, my favorite place in the entire game when I played it, and the other Burning Crusade areas in Azeroth come out. It will be so epic, especially once the instanced areas are added (if they are to be added eventually that is :P).

No substitute for the real thing, but I like how it looks. =p
have you thought of how you'd move from place to place faster then... walking or flying?
could you use the nether "Fast travelling" from city to city?
or a simple mod

Please put me out of my misery. Would the mapping program work on other games? I'm really interested to know if it would work on grand theft auto San Andreas. Please private message me or leave a comment on here. I don't mind making a donation to you for the privalige of using your program.

The software will work if you can provide it with a list of triangles with x/y/z/u/v coordinates, but it won't help in getting the data out of the game in the first place. Each game has different file formats, so there is no general solution.
Aside from the format issue, I have considered releasing some code to help with conversion projects like this, but I haven't put it together yet. At a minimum, it would convert heightmaps and triangle meshes to blocks, and then light everything before exporting to the region file format.
When you release the map for download, could I possibly make a 12 minute long trailer? I would love to make a trailer for this map with some mods and the shattering playing in the background.
Rumsey when do you think you can give us the first Download ?
I'm busy with a lot of school work at the moment (someone get me out of here) but a download is possible some time late summer early fall. I just want to fix anything that's obviously broken it before it gets released.
On a related note, I have started a github repo where I plan to release some of my source code. It's mostly a skeleton at the moment (it can only relight maps, nothing else) but a number of other things will be added later.
It should only modify the light values (see before and after), but, you may want to make a backup of the map just in case.
The primary purpose of the relighting feature will be to relight maps after making modifications with the tool, e.g. adding or removing large sections of the terrain, or creating entire new regions, etc. Those features aren't there yet, however.

I've considered it, but not as far as to actually commit to it.

Might get the post-render fine tuning down faster, crowdsourcing it.

It is playable with an unmodded client in multiplayer.
I really, really want to run around the finished world. =D

to you
Best of luck on completing this project.
You need to pass the map directory as a command-line argument. In Eclipse, you can add the argument in the "Run Configurations" window shown here.
You should get output like this:
