Hello, my name is Zaccheus. I've been inspired by other Minecraft "journals", specifically Skibum's Journal and I have decided to create my own. But instead of a minecraft adventure, I will be creating a journal chronicling the building of a city.
Basic Information
*The city is built on an The Voxel Box server with access to unlimited resources and flymod.
*The texture pack is The Voxel Box official texture pack.
*Located at (800, 1950) This is here in case you want to check it out from above, you will have to download the latest cartograph rendering of the server located here. *You can see any pictures that do not make it into the main entries here.
City Information
More information on this later.
NOTE: The links broke after the forum move. Just scroll down to find the other entries.
Entry One: Rebirth
Here is the piece of land I'm starting with.
First, I created some towers that will eventually have some sort of bridge connecting them.
I created a third tower. The main entrance to the town will be between this tower and the one it is connected to.
I finished the main gates to the city (for the most part, it's likely that some tweaking to this will be done). I'm pretty happy with the way it looks.
The next entry will most likely include a windmill field that will be situated on that mountain in the background. The primary dilemma I'm having right now is what type of windmills to build. I could build them in a more modern/futuristic style demonstrated here, here, and here, or a more medieval type of windmill such as this. If I do decide to build the windmills in more of a medieval style, I will add my own flare to them and definitely change the shape a little as I'm not a huge fan of the shape of the windmills. I will, however, keep the circular shape.
I've tried to build the modern ones before, and they are extremely difficult to build and make it look correct. I think the medieval-style ones will be a bit easier to build, but I do really like the shape and style of the modern windmills.
I realize that this entry may have been lacking in the picture department, but as the city advances, I will add more pictures to each entry as there will more things to show you guys. =D
Anyways, tell me what you guys think, any feedback is much appreciated!
The futuristic windmills will be harder. Anyways, if you decide to make a windmill, maybe make the windmill "generate" (Redstone torches, switches, etc.) to make stuff word around the city? :biggrin.gif:

My dog will be named Cat. I will only provide milk buckets for it to eat and will not be its friend until it becomes a cat.

That's a really good idea actually, haven't really thought about that much. I'm sure I'll be able to incorporate redstone into the town somehow. They could power the city lamps and other things.
I'm making a lot of progress on the windmill. Once I finish the main one I will make some smaller ones and then entry two should be ready to post!
Thanks for your support :biggrin.gif:

This is the base of the windmill. As you can see, I went with more of the medieval-style structure instead of the modern ones. The shape was loosely based off of these windmills from Pokemon: The First Movie :biggrin.gif:
Now comes the hard part: the blades.
I tried to make the blades in an interesting shape, but instead they kind of turned out to look like they are in motion which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just wasn't what I was going for.
I'm pretty happy with the way it looks, except the blades. They look a little too "animated" and they're not too detailed. I'm just not sure they fit in entirely with the rest of the buildings so far so there's a good chance that I will change them, but I'm moving on to other buildings first.
I tried adding in some smaller windmills but haven't been able to get the look right as of yet and I can't make them too big because they will interfere with the bigger one. I'm thinking that I might have the mountain raised a bit on the right side of the windmill with VoxelSniper
Next order of business is getting the city roads laid down and building additional city infrastructure. I also plan on doing the interiors of the towers and the windmill, which won't constitute an entry alone, but I will put a picture or two on the next one.
Anyways, thanks for reading! Remember, you can check out any pictures that didn't make it into the post by checking my imgur.

Sorry for the lack of updates during the week, I have been pretty busy with school lately.
I have been able to get some work done, but I won't be able to do anything in the next few days as I will be gone until the weekend. You can expect an update then!
Here's a bridge I've been working on.
Thanks for reading!

Absolutely love the mix of colors in your building style. It makes everything look so much more detailed. I am also glad that you went with the medieval approach because it goes with your tower and bridge much better.
Anyways I'm going to be following this thread for updates!
Wow! It's really nice and i love how you play with the colours. Can't wait to see it complete.
Thanks! I haven't really built with some of these blocks before so it's interesting to see how they interact with each other.

Ya I agree, the medieval style just gives the city more of a feel, especially when wandering around it.
Anyways, should have the next entry posted sometime this weekend, I'll keep you posted!

Hello all! I've finally been able to complete entry number three so here it is.
First I made this bridge, as seen earlier in the thread, to connect the two towers that span the small bay. This will connect two sides of the city. I'm planning to make the north side (right of the windmill) a bit more populated, and have the south side have houses and other structures build into the cliff face.
After that was finished, I created the path leading in from the gate. I think the white brick looks quite nice as a pathway. I originally planned to have lamp-posts in the middle area, but they turned in to the buttress-like structures and I think they look quite nice.
This is the near completed area. There will be a town hall in the middle. Also, if you notice, the path is wider on the opposite side of the entrance. I plan on having a grand staircase leading up to some spectacular building, or something along those lines. Either than or it will just lead further into the town.
This will be where the port section of the city too. There will be a small marketplace and numerous trading structures as well as a small dock and some boats.
One of these paths will lead to the port, and the other one will lead....somewhere, haven't quite figured that out yet. As you can see, I created a little bridge to another tower.
This will link up to one of the towers that forms the main entrance via a curved bridge. Note: These towers appear closer than they actually are here.
In other news, I think I have a name for the city: Ventus
[Warning] - Bad photo editing.
Well, I know this entry wasn't the most interesting one as I didn't get much done, but don't fret! I should have a few buildings up in the next entry. I also did some minor interior work, but nothing too significant.
The town hall should be completed and some paths extended. I will also try to expand the side south of the entrance a bit, I might put a smaller port there, I'm not entirely sure, but it will be something interesting. Promise.
Anyways, a few other things I need to work on are the white brick walls. One of my pet peeves in Minecraft is flat walls, and my walls are exactly that. So something will be done about that.
A few other things of note, the next entry might be a special entry. This will feature other things that I've been working on as well as some other things maybe. I dunno, just a possibility.
Ok, I was wondering what you guys thought about planes in Minecraft. A player named aitren on our server has begun an airport and put up a livestream of him building an Osprey and I thought I'd like to have a stab at it. The aircraft I've been looking at is a P-38 Lightning, although that is subject to change. It's likely that I will build this in SSP and have it transferred over because I want to make sure it's up to par with the other amazing aircraft at the airport. Tell we what you guys think!
Well, thanks for reading!
See you soon.

Construction has begun on the city hall and it's looking very good! I've also finished up some more less interesting infrastructure stuff.
Also, a surprise was sitting in my city when I logged in this morning and it should offer some interesting building opportunities! Can't wait to share that with you guys. :biggrin.gif:
Here is a hint:
Meh, I'm not good at hints, whatever.
Entry Four should be out this weekend as always, see you there!
Edit: Also, my faces have turned in to emoticons! :biggrin.gif:
I'm still struggling to find my own style and I have a bridge that's in dire need of an upgrade. I've started trying to emulate this one, but It will be much longer and taller when complete. It's really quite complex, but I'm hoping my result will be as good as yours.

Interested in seeing it when it's done?
Ya, I definitely understand trying to find your own style. The last city I started stagnated because I didn't have a clear direction or style. One thing that helps with this is sketching, even in the smallest sense. Just sketching cool shapes while you're doing other stuff helps a lot, but also looking at real-world examples of buildings.
And yes! I'd love to see your finished bridge! Having a longer bridge opens up a plethora of different build options. I can link you to a topic that teaches you how to create parabolas in Minecraft if you are needing help with that.
Edit: Your name XD
In other news, I actually had my city hall deleted because I wasn't exactly comfortably in the way it was looking, but it is coming along. I am making an entry for the next Worth1000 contest which is limiting the time I can work on the city. I will not be able to include that in my next entry however because if you have an entry you cannot tell people what it is to ensure fair voting, but do be expecting an entry on that once voting is done!
Here is the program I used to create the curves in all of my bridges. It's a basic MS Excel spreadsheet where you plug in the width and height of the parabola you want and it spits it out.
Note: this program was not made by me.
And here is a link to the page that tells you how to create parabolas manually. That topic also delves into some interesting techniques on building with Fibonacci numbers as well as different types of parabolas.
Hope these help, I can't wait to see your finished bridge!

Wow. That is awesome. Really puts my own stuff into perspective (and I think "stuff" is the right word here). I absolutely love your style with all those different materials that you incorporate. And the level of detail is breathtaking. really, that is probably the best minecraft-work I have seen so far (although, admittedly, I have not seen very much apart from my own).
Keep up the great work!
:biggrin.gif: Thank you! And I actually quite enjoy your creations, they are very nice.
If you guys are interested, here's a link to the Voxelbox's photo albums. The stuff there puts my work to shame! If you are needing inspiration go ahead and check it out, I really admire some of the things on there.
Note: I'm not trying to advertise, but I kind of am as a result of things I want to show you guys. Sorry about that =/
