Tonight I wanted to play chess and found that I was missing a piece from my set, so instead of buying a new set why not build one. I have seen many chess sets built in minecraft, but not any real world chess sets modeled after minecraft, and from that thought the idea began to grow.
I wish I had the patience to do this right and carve the pieces from something, but I think I may have to settle for making them from foam or paper.
So far I haven't completely decided how I want to separate out the two sides (dark and light), and I have yet to determine all the pieces.
I am thinking....
King - default minecraft skin aka steve
Queen - Creeper possibly (sorry ladies it seemed fitting)
Bishop - Skeleton?
Knight - Skeleton mounted on a spider (seems really hard to make but cool) other ideas?
Rook - not sure what I want here maybe a little minecraft fort
Pawn - either slime or sheep for sure
So far all I have is a PSD template of the board layout.
The layout basically just has the 4 sides and top, 18x18x1.75
Let me know what you think, and if you have any ideas. Also if anyone wants to use this feel free.
I need to be careful with choosing pieces simply because I have no idea how I am going to make them yet and making multiple spider jockeys and such would be insanely difficult. I really like the idea of the mine cart being the rook that makes sense and will be super easy to make.
As for using mobs from the nether, I don't know what it is about the nether but I have never really thought of it as a piece of my classic vision of minecraft, so I am very hesitant to use it.
For the pieces I am thinking of using 3d printing to make them, although I haven't been able to find a good 3d printing service, ideally I just need someone with access to a maker bot or cnc machine on the cheap. I found a place that does it, and they seem to be cheaper than anywhere else, but it would still be very very expensive. Here is the creeper model I made for testing purposes that anyone could order. http://www.shapeways.com/model/270879/creeper.html?gid=ug
For making Spiders and Spider Jockeys, maybe you could make the head and thorax of the spider, then stick eight pipe cleaners or needles into it?
The Ghast probably wouldn't work, and since you're hesitant about using them, they could probably not appear.
Also, making more than 1-3 spiders won't be a problem if the two sides have different pieces (like Steve vs. Monsters).
In that case, maybe the queen should be the Spider Jockey, leaving what to do with the king. Here's my idea:
Black King = Monster Spawner!
You could make it by just painting a cube, and it would be a pretty fun addition. Plus, the Monster Spawner being the king of the "Monsters" side would be pretty fitting.
White:
King - Notch or Steve
Queen - Cows (best useful animal - eg) milk, leather, meat, exp points..)
Bishop - Snow Golem, like said above
Knight - Wolves, they're loyal to you just like a knight would.
Rooks - Sheep. Baaah.
Pawns - Chickens, like above.
Black:
King - Herobrine (if gone with Notch) or Creeper (if gone with Steve)
Queen - Vice-Versa from above. Creeper if Herobrine, Herobrine if Creeper.
Bishop - Skeletons (like above)
Knights - Spiders or Zombie Pigman
Rooks - Vice Versa from Knight.
Pawn - Zombie. Useless little things..

I think you should make the king or bishop the creeper. The reason I think he should be a bishop is because the bishop moves diagonally and when creepers are gonna blow, they moves around you in a diagonal way of sorts.

Also, if you would like any help, I could help. This sounds fun. Thanks for sharing!

for the rook, I say a minecart, maybe with a chicken in it :tongue.gif:
bishop should be ghast
and pawns should be zombies :smile.gif:
Rook: Minecart
Knight: Zombie Pigman
Check mate!
White:
King: Steve
Queen: Steve with female skin
Rook: Cobble Fort
Knight: Pig Rider
Bishop: Minecart
Pawn: Pig
Black:
King: Spider Jockey
Queen: Ghast
Rook: Huge Slime
Knight: Spider
Bishop: Skeleton
Pawn: Zombie

I like the board though.
This looks freaking awesome. Maybe you can have it even more customized, like a modified chess game with minecraft rules
So I heard they like Server Population?

King - steve
Queen - rana
Bishop - cow
Knight - pig
Rook - sheep
Pawn - chicken
------------------------------
King - ender dragon (on a Stand/pole)
Queen - ghast (on a stand/pole)
Bishop - enderman
Knight - spider jockey
Rook - creeper
Pawn - zombie
---------------------------
This seems the most reasonable suggestion, steve, rana, and passive mobs vs. Agressive mobs
