I have been playing Minecraft on Xbox for a few months, I have experience building, creating, mining and using redstone.
I became a little bored with the way Xbox minecraft works so I recently purched the PC version of Minecraft to try out playing on a server. I have played on my own to get used to the controls and think I am ready to join the server community.
The problem is I know very little about Minecraft as a server community, I do not know any commands, what is permitted and what is not. I did join a server and the one reply to my help request was "/buy some land, type /sethome and build something" "/sethome", "/buy" I have no idea what they mean.
I need to learn Minecraft and I think the best way to do this is to join a server where I will be treated like the idiot I am. I need to be told what to do, whether I need to buy a plot, how to get the money to do this, where to build, what I am allowed to build and all these stupid Noob questions.
I can build pretty well, I just need help with the where and with what.
Also if anyone has a link to some useful information/help please reply. I cannot find any because I do not know what I am looking for.
When joining a server type /rules to see their rules, and then type /help to see your commands. When you type /help it will show you all of your available commands and give you a short description of what they do. The first command you mentioned, /sethome, lets you set your home. Basically it acts as a bed would and you respawn there when you die. You can use /home to go to your home. The command /buy is a buycraft command(Most known for buycraft anyways, could be something else) which is a plugin that helps with server donations. Unless you want to donate to a server, it's a useless command.
Most survival servers these days will have the factions plugin which allows players to creates teams. Each faction will have a home, you can get there by typing /f home. You can choose to ally with other factions or declare them your enemy. It also has three different chat modes, public, ally, and faction only.
If you really want to just build and not worry about getting griefed then join a creative server. Most creative servers will have an anti-grief plugin in place. Most of the time plots of land on creative servers are free but usually you will need to finish your current plot before you can get a new one. That is where ranks come in. Pretty much every bukkit server will have ranks. There is a default rank for every server that you will start out as. On creative servers you usually get promoted to the next rank by just building awesome things whereas survival server ranks are usually obtained by playing a lot and being a friendly and trustworthy member.
Any server that accepts donations will have donation ranks, depending on how much you donate will decide what rank you receive. Donation ranks are never anything too special but they help servers stay around longer. What you receive from your donation will also depend on the amount you donate.
Now we move on to staff ranks. Every server will have some form of staff, Administrators, Moderators, and some servers will also consider a builder rank as part of the staff. Bare in mind the amount and kind staff on every server varies depending on what kind of things the server needs. Some servers may have a Developer rank for people that code custom plugins for that server, others may have a Graphic Artist rank for people who contribute pictures that help attract more players. But all in all most servers will just have the typical Mod, Admin, and Owner positions (Owner isn't usually obtainable unless you want to help with the server costs ). I'm sure you guessed it, these ranks are the hardest to obtain. On most servers you will have to work for it (those are the quality servers who hand pick their staff). Other servers may merely require an application (depending on the requirements of the applications and how professional the owner is, these servers don't usually stay around for as long if you know what I mean).
That is pretty much all you need to know as far as how servers work. Good luck.
