I like to host, build, run public servers and i want to make a server that the public will enjoy and stay to play, ill build any type.. Factions, pvp, roleplay, survival, etc... I need help on which one will be most successful.
Hello there. I am going to assume you are familiar with Bukkit/Vanilla. Bukkit = Plugins Vanilla = No Plugins.
For PVP Friendly: Factions/Vanilla
Griefing allowed? Yes: Factions/Vanilla No: Towny
Economy? Yes: Bukkit No: Vanilla
If you want players to be well protected: Towny
Friendly: Towny.
Other plugins:
Survival Games - Based off of The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins.
MCMMO - Gives your server the feel of an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online game) with leveling systems and game upgrades.
Iconomy/Vault/BOSEconomy - Economy plugins that connect with other plugins to provide a monetary system.
Pail - Server administrating tool to put your command window in a much nicer, cleaner area with more options.
Essentials - A must-have. It gives you SO many more commands to use with your server, making it much better.
Anti-Cheat - Stahp those hackers! It detects who's using hacks to fast-break, fly, etc.
Orebfuscator - This one is similar to Anti-Cheat, because it blocks X-Ray! Now those rich cheaters will stop cheating!
Your players will most likely look for a leading owner. Recruit staff members after testing them, or making them apply. If you have a forum, then set it up so players can talk on there, and even apply to be staff. Only accept them: 1. They are well known and mature on your server already. 2. They have SUCH a good application that you feel they would absolutely benefit the server.
Don't have too many staff members! Builders aren't quite worth it. Maybe something like this: 3 Administrators, 5 Moderators, 7 Guides.
And maybe a Head-Admin, Head-Mod, and Head-Guide. They can only get those positions if YOU deem them worthy, not by applying.
Play often, every day. Players WILL have expectations of you, but you can still find time to have fun with them. Just go in survival mode. Also, don't let your staff (or yourself) give out free items. Maybe only give your Admins or Head Admin Creative Mode.
One more thing. Its not uncommon for server owners to start out hosting it on their own computer, then by the first or second donation switching to Professional Hosts such as Daddy Cheese hosting, etc.
If you need help running your server at the beginning, feel free to let me know.

Hi, I'm Mooclan, one of the top Minecraft Survival Games forumers, with several thousand posts, and counting.
I find survival servers to be pretty fun because there's a lot to do when you start out but PVP is also good if its a good design i would recommend either of them two
Could you explain survival to me? What plugins and rules are involved? All i can think of a someone building a house So what do players do and what can i setup for them

Thanks for your info, im aware of most of this. I wont be hosting the server on my computer i know a few hosts but that pail plugin looks sweet can you hook it up to servers hosted on another system?
If you get a hosted server, then it should come with some sort of control panel. One type is Multicraft. You can go look at its features here: http://www.multicraft.org/site/page?view=home
You might be able to ask if you can use Pail, but seeing as Multicraft is paid, it would most definitely be better. Note: It's free for up to 10 players.
