Personally, I also think this is a hoax. Any map that I have played on where heavy PVP has occurred looks nothing like this. There is too much smooth stone, and there would be far more pillars and randomly half built/half destroyed structures. The cobblestone generators and nether portal problems are also a tell. I also can't swallow how the Greifer's base was so miraculously untouched. I don't care how fancy the waterfall elevator was. It is it is very easy to bridge up to a floating island, even if under arrow fire from two players.
That said, I am very interested in seeing this study done for real, and I'd like to volunteer to be a player in the experiment. Are there any separate threads where others have announced a plan to try the same experiment?
It's been pointed out by many forum readers that this is a hoax. They are not completely wrong. I will clear up what happened and what didn't.
Most importantly, the screenshots are fake and are from a recreation
The experiment took place during Beta 1.3.X, the screenshots are from Minecraft 1.2.5
The merchants guild wasn't as successful as the story says, they were however the only structure left standing.
Most of the fortresses actually took 4 or 5 weeks to completely decay even though the world was scarred horribly
The nether was encased in a 42x42 bedrock wall to disable travel via portals so it wasn't as profitable to the players as originally suggested.
The griefers base had been broken into a few times but they held off successfully, near the end they spent all their time defending though.
Cobblestone generators weren't considered because people were still surrounded by stone.
The bottom of the map was an endless maze of 2x1 tunnels which were amazing to explore
I had hosted the server for 2 months because as an university student that's all I could afford. I can't access the map any more and due to modding I've lost my screenshots of the real thing a long time ago
I never thought to share this experiment until months ago and by then the story needing embellishing to seem relevant and interesting. I don't regret what I did because it's inspired many people to take the experiment into their own hands with new implications that reflect the real world.

Really? I think we already figured that out. Also, the experiment never took place under your hands. Until thirty people come foward..

It is too bad you felt like the real data (if there was any real data) was not adequate. Unfortunately, since you 'embellished' your story with fake screenshots and exaggerations, you have lost all credibility.
If you have a problem with accessing old files, don't make something up. There are plenty of people on these forums who would have helped you get the files back.
this idea is a little out there but what IF this post was faked just to get everyones hopes up and make everyone into perfect guinea pigs before the experiment really happens.
think about it, he tells everyone the experiment and how "successful" it was before in order to get alot of people to want to participate in it. now that everyone wants to, he can easily find people to do it. pretty freaking genius plan if im correct.
its like a scientist for the military telling the public about a new Super Soldier Drug and saying it was Tested with great results but not actually testing it before hand and just scamming people into participating.
Yea, I'm fine with what you did.
At least others will be able to provide conclusive, well-documented results.
Corridor digital should make a 5 part mini series on this.
Black screen, white text, low voice over:
"On March 6, 2012, an experiment was run on a minecraft server.
The experiment was simple, 30 players, 5 hours a day, survive, but with 1 catch, they were all trapped in a 350 meter square.
The videos you are about to view are inspired by the events that followed.
Viewer discretion is advised."
Flashes white, fades to title: The Closed Map Experiment.
I believe people at this point should let this thread die; it has been admitted and proven that this was a fake, and he does not deserve the recognition and publicity he is getting at the moment.

no no no the story has been "bent" and the photos are fake. it does not mean the experiment itself isnt.
I have read the Experiment, and while sad it was twisted I still would like to try the concept, see what it would be like. In other words, if anyone is planning to recreate this please let me know. I could also invite around 5 others I am sure would like to try.
Also, if I am not included in an experiment we have already begun planning our own, to be recorded as a timelapse and first person youtube series. This would require more players which I am sure I can find here if interested!
Our group can film it either way, just contact me.

I'm sorry if you feel offended that this isn't real, but you posting in my thread doesn't help it die. You are running a large experiment inspired by this thread. I don't take credit or try to own this idea but I'm confused. First you PM me asking to use this experiment and now you want the thread that inspired your project to die?

It may be somewhat fake, but he certainly was the first to create the concept of limited resources and a closed environment in multiplayer. I think you should just leave him be. We'll have better documentation anyways (as soon as we settle on how to document it :| ).

My Youtube channel.
Contains Pachebel's Canon made with noteblocks, a working Rubik's cube made with pistons, and the ultimate TNT cannon.
Assuming this was real, it would have been incredible to see what would happen if at the end of the experiment you moved the bedrock walls out an extra 50-100 blocks to see whether they would care for it in a different way from the first time they started or whether they would just make a mad dash for the resources that ran out first

The main reason for that was because you were the first one to recreate this experiment and post it on the minecraft forums, I also felt that it would more respectful that way. This was not the first time I had heard of this project, as I have mentioned before I saw the original post on 4chan years ago.

Let me point a few flaws out here...
You basally changed the story, tweaked some key things about it, so whats us to say you didnt make the whole thing up? Also you are ignoring the fact people have found this as a copypaste story from 4chan and other sites but with this version edited a bit. Then you go on to say your getting paid for some interview about something you had nothing to do with and is false? ....sorry but noone is believing you and this story is complete ********.
1 final thing.....last nail that seals this coffin (for me anyway)
You claimed it was true then said you edited it and even made up false so called facts....
How could you have wrote this out in a hurry if you edited the facts? Also if this happend months ago why wasnt this already typed up? You had nothing to do with this and the fact you hide the fact that screenies are fake and parts of the story are not 100% true some even changing who was successful and who was not just keeps nailing that nail in proving its fake.
Now if it was true
1. You wouldnt show us fake screenshots and sday "this is what hapend to this building and that building ect" You would have told us from the start
2. You shouldnt have changed facts and say this guild was going well if it really wasnt
3. There are still flaws in said story you didnt address along with users calming to have found this copypaste story that was just edited from 4chan...
This leads me to think this whole thing is false and ********. If this ever did happen you where not part of it as its an edited copy n paste story, the fact you say you had some interview about this just makes people hate you because the story thats false you attempt to pass off as true, you failed.
Story is fake move on people and let this thread die

Right so a post before that when you take credit for the idea and the post before that taking a interview taking credit for this has nothing to do with it now? Yeah right, you had nothing to do with this and your other posts say you did soo please stop lying

True^ Although the story is not entirely accurate it does give us a lot to think about.
