Greetings! As much as I love my current server's people, most of them play WoW. I don't see them online much, and I'm certain that when the next WoW expansion comes out later this month, they'll rarely be on Minecraft after that. So I'm looking for a new SMP server!
Things I want:
I'm flexible on many of these, but it's a list of what I'm looking for.
Community: Moderate-Size and Mature. I like to have people to online to chat with while I build, and who I can help when I'm taking a break from my project(s). At the same time, I don't want it so crowded that I have to go a few kilometers from spawn before I find a spot to build. As for "Mature", I don't mean Rated NC17. I mean a community that is (mostly) comprised of mature people. Either adults (preferred) or kids who's parents won't freak out if I accidentally swear. I'm former military, so that happens. Often. Addendum: While I'm okay with kids, I must stress that I VERY MUCH PREFER ADULTS. I'm a social person, and I have nothing to chat about when it comes to kids.
Server Type: Non PvP, Easy-Hard Survival Multiplayer. I've played with a number of mods, and I like a few of them. I prefer mods that modify the player and the interface, rather than what can be built, though. I also don't enjoy playing on Peaceful, and there's no way I'm touching Hardcore or PvP servers. And creative servers get boring for me quickly.
Moderation Style: Relaxed, Fair, United. As stated before, I enjoy helping my fellow Minecrafters. I've heard horror stories of people who got banned without a word because they were trying to help, and the moderator got the wrong story. I'd enjoy that not happening. However, I'd like the moderation team to at least present a united front. Arguing about a punishment in public is not very promising.
Also: I like to play pranks on my fellow Minecrafters. These pranks are typically harmless (though may be annoying) in nature, and I always offer to undo whatever I've done, and often allow the target to keep whatever materials I used. As such, it would be nice to have a moderation team that can tell the difference between a griefer and someone who's just trying to break the monotony. Or get "revenge" for doors left open.
Environmental Protection: Creepers don't damage terrain, Fire doesn't spread. Although it's preferred I'm very flexible on this. I've been on servers that had it both ways, and I can deal with either.
Back-Ups: Daily Minimum, Prefer Better. There's nothing worse than having hours worth of work gone because of a server hiccup. Frequent backups are nice.
White list: Optional. I think it's a good thing to have, but it's not like they're always needed.
Server Economy: Sharing is Caring! While I'm okay with mods like iConomy, I would much rather be part of a community that shares with one another. Or, at the very least, doesn't freak out when you take melons from the farm.
I think that's about it. If any prospective server denizens have any questions for me, feel free to ask.

'What is beauty?', because that would fall within the purview of your
conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems."
I feel you would really enjoy stormcraft! We have pretty much exactly what you are looking for.
1. The community is not really too large that you get swamped with chat in-game, just 10 - 15 players at once.
2. The server is not PvP based at all, we have 2 pvp arenas but other than that there is no PvP
3. We have fairly relaxed mods and admins who you will not hear from much unless you are hacking or greifing.
4. Yep, creepers and fire-spread disabled
5. No whitelist, sorry. We have found we do not need to in order to control greifing or any other issues. The mods can always handle that.
Also, we have teamspeak, I think you would enjoy getting to talk to everyone!
So if the server is right for you then, well you know what to do.

Server Type: Non PvP, Unmodded Easy-Hard Survival Multiplayer. I've played with a number of mods, and while I like a few of them, I find that I prefer not having any (Except for Rei's Minimap. That mod is a godsend.) I also don't enjoy playing on Peaceful, and there's no way I'm touching Hardcore or PvP servers. And creative servers get boring for me quickly.

* I'm not really THAT picky, am I?
Lol, Not really that picky to be honest. I am working on setting up a new server here in 2 weeks if you would like to join? I will send you the rest of the information if you ask for it. Thank you.
I think you'd be a perfect fit on my 18+ whitelisted server. Because of the age restriction and the whitelist, we hardly ever have to deal with griefers or spammers or cheaters or anything like that. With that distraction removed from the game, we get to play the game of minecraft how it is supposed to be played. Everybody on our team is 18+ and our hardware is top grade intel on international backbone fiber.
As for our community, we are www.funtania.com, our live map is smp.funtania.com/map, we have mumble, we talk on skype, we like to be community oriented and build, we are not pvp but we have pvp arenas, our difficulty is hard, we go for semi-vanilla, we back up often on ssd's and we have rollbacks, though we hardly ever use them because' there's no need to.
I think you'd really enjoy this, but if you are not into the 18+ whitelist deal, then you may be a good candidate for our public server, which has the same specs but without the whitelist. Or if you want to rediscover your love for mods you can try our custom mod server that features things like mystcraft, forestry, and other top notch minecraft mods. Anyways, thanks for your time. Pm me if you are interested and I'll set up a tour on whatever server you want.
I've tried it. I like most of it, but Equivalent Exchange feels too easy, and kinda ruins it for me.
@Everyone else: Thank you for your responses! I'm looking at the servers in the order I receive them in. Since you can't just walk into a server and know if you're going to stay immediately (unless it's really that bad), it'll take me awhile to get through them.

Umm, I'm making my first server on the 1.4 update. I got 3 moderators who all are reasonable and friendly. My server is vanilla, and no commands shall be used ever. Mob griefing is a part of minecraft, so I will not change that (you DID say this was optional). I have backups, and there is no white list. PvP is not off, but I don't think it will happen with 4 authorities (me and the moderators) on the job. The difficulty is on normal, so people lost in the night can bond through teamwork. Everyone is glad to help eachother. There isn't any trade system, just what the traders think fair. I would love to have a person like you on my server. Message me if you want to join! I'm only 13, but I think I can pull a good vanilla off! I think you would like the server. :3

I agree with the Equivalent Exchange to a certain degree. I think it all depends on what type of player personality you have and what you're looking to accomplish on a particular map. For most of us, it takes the grind out of material aquisition. So if we know we're going to need a heck ton of brick, we don't have to travel 1000 squares in every direction scrounging around for every bit of clay under the water.
On the other hand I'm not a fan of people who can do a certain action with or without equivalent exchange, and time after time take the easy method and use EE. We tend to steer the middle ground on our server, so if you're interested here's our thread and some of the projects we're working on:
Okay, well, that's one server scratched off the list. That only took about two days. Keep the invitations coming. If the first one was any indication, I'll be working through these pretty quickly.
EDIT: Also, I modified my requirements slightly, specifically the part on Moderation and Server Mods.

It sounds like Infinite Earth would make a great home for you. We have a mature community, whitelisted. The mods are just players who regulate harassment and greifing and run server events (build contests, pvp arena tournaments, mob arena tournaments, etc.). We take griefing very seriously. Click the banner in my signature to learn more and find the whitelist application.
While I have the urge to go on a long, long rant about my thoughts on PvP in general, ending with my thoughts on PvP in Minecraft, I'm just going to give you a polite, "No, thanks."
No, thanks.

Hey Sigil, I hate to sound like the rest of the bunch offering our server's to you, but I honestly feel that Our server would fit you quite well. We are a small friendly community that is currently reaching out to players like you in hopes of recruiting some new players. We aren't picky as to what you can or cant build, you are welcome to do whatever (as long as you abide by the rules, of course). We try to maintain and fix any greifing's that do happen on the server, and to help with that we have disabled creeper explosions. Our server takes backups every 30mins or so, and should a greif occur, the Owner or I will likely rollback your chunks to the state in which it was non-greifed. As an Admin, and frequent player on the server, I can assure you that whatever concerns you have we will be able to keep track of them. If you feel like popping by and taking a look at our server, the IP is mine.koodaa.net and we have a website which is http://games.koodaa.net/
