Yeah, I'll admit, the ability to use that texture pack kinda ruins this game/server for me, whole thing is pointless. Snippers just sitting above the world saying "I spy you 60 layers below, I'mma come get you" constantly. There's no challenge in that.
Smokefactory has found several of my hidden bases using his texture pack, which he has admitted to using. Can we please get a ban on him? I'm not asking to whitelist, or anything, I'm just sick of people using texturepacks to find my **** that I spent hours hiding/making
Not to mention that at least the part of the map I play on is eaten up with edits and chunk problems, somehow large masses of land are being edited out and replaced with glitch-fest holes to the abyss.
Although a pure freedom server is nice in theory, you're throwing your money away because people who seriously play it or would pay to keep it up won't without some form of an admin presence to weed out the immature crap.
I really, really like[d] this server. Barring certain players, this is by far my favorite current server.
But it's getting out of hand. If we're not going to have any active moderators then at least put in a whitelist or protect chests. The time has come for a WL. 20/20 people online happened several times today, but 1 out of every 5 of people is flying around the map, using transparent textures, and/or having some ridiculous supertools. I don't mind griefers, I don't mind trolls, I don't mind thieves, I don't mind spawnkillers, stalkers, etc. It's all good because it's all part of the game. But when the annoyances have an unfair, hacked advantages over the legitimate players. When there is no possible way to hide anything because these guys see all... then what's the point. Really? No rules is fun, but no rules should not mean go ahead and glitch and hack your way through minecraft. At least, that's not what I had in mind when I joined the server. A map reset (my reasoning being that these guys keep coming in, raiding rare and precious minerals from bases and a small map, and then get banned or never return; stuff is going byebye forever fast), a WL, and mayhaps a moderator would be just dandy. I don't think any of these things even require hMod, but that is available.
I don't mean to ***** and moan, but look at the thread, visit the server, the real players don't have a chance anymore. I suspect people won't stick around for long when they realize that.

there is obviously a major bug being exploited, i say shutdown the server or make a temp whitelist (the reserved list) til notch or someone else finds a fix
Okay we now have a veritable army of moderators, with varying powers. I will come back and 'fine tune' the list over time, but for now most have /ban. Eventually I hope to have a large number of people with /kick, and a few with /ban.
The kickers can keep cheaters at bay until banners come along.
Take note that you can do several things to mitigate this issue as players.
1. Store your valuable items in chests ONLY while you are online.
Load them onto your character before logging off in a safe location. This will leave cheaters a much smaller window of opportunity to get your valuables - and it will be harder for them to sneak up on your valuables with you online. As usual, seperate valuables from non-valuables.
2. Surround chests with other substances.
Dirt, lava, obsidian, grass, cobble, whatever. Surround your valuables chests and they will be harder to spot for many wall hackers. Put them in an unambiguous location that is seperate from your main base/workshop/farm. This will be only marginally effective against wall hackers who 'flag' chests with a certain color, although not all wall hackers can do that.
3. Quit hoarding, start living!
Kill people rather than hoarding materials you have farmed/factoried. This is a server where it is entirely possible to survive through combat, and prosper doing so. Deal with the reality that you will lose everything in combat many times. This creates excitement and the 'deflation' that our server experiences relative to other servers.

An aside: I do miss the hidden base aspect though. I miss knowing where my enemies territory was, but not their base. People used to be extremely territorial on this server - hunting one another if their base was merely approached. People would constantly do 360s and keep an eye out for approaching enemies. There was more sneak mode involved. Hopefully notch kills this cheating issue and we can return to the raw wildness that began this server.
Does it ever end?
EDIT: In case it isn't clear, Rmotx is the self-admitted user. Currently showing off his base-finding skills in the game chat.
More hacking!
Since we can't jeopardize the 'freedom' spirit of the server, I think we need more mods/admins to ban these guys as soon as they pop up.
No offense, but this server seriously needs some more active moderation. It'd improve the experience a thousand fold.

now also Mellted, whatever his name is
and whytrykid. if any of this matters anymore.
The current bugs are related to a crummy minecraft release + unstable hmod.
We are going ahead and giving the banhammer to a number of players who have been identified as non-cheating contributors to the server.
