Hey there Minecraft Forums community, I hope you're all doing well.
Recently as I was browsing the clans section a thought struck me. After looking at all the threads entitled 'What's a clan?' or 'Any good clans?' I thought that it should be easier to find and get to the clan FAQ. I looked around for a while but I couldn't find one, so I took it upon myself to write a detailed in-depth clan guide.
The goal of this post is to welcome new users to the clans section, and give an overview of what a clan is. If you would like me to rephrase or explain something better please don't hesitate to ask.
So without further ado, let us get onto the FAQ.
What is a clan? A clan is a group of people that have teamed up to accomplish a goal. This goal might be to build amazing structures, dominate a server or help others when they need it. Keep in mind that griefing, stealing and raiding clans are not allowed on the Minecraft Forums.
How many members are in most clans? Clans can be any size, but the average clan commonly has around 10-40 members. Of course, this depends on a lot of factors, such as how old the clan is, how popular the clan is and how active the clan is. Newer clans would naturally have a lot less!
Aren't clans just small servers? Many clans have their own private servers just for the clan members, but a server is not a clan. On a server, even if it's whitelisted, people go and do their own thing, but in clans people know each other well and stick together.
What types of clans are there? There are no official 'types' of clans but there are clan goals. Some common clan goals are:
To dominate an entire PvP server
To help other people in Minecraft issues
To work on projects together
To create amazing buildings together
Sometimes just to chat!
How do I find/join a clan? When you first enter the clans section of the Minecraft Forums you will be presented with the topics that have been recently posted in. This is very useful for finding active clans. If you are looking for a more specific clan (let's say that you want to join a creative building clan) you can browse tags to find what you are looking for. Once you've found a clan you like search the front page for an application and fill it out. The leaders of that clan should get back to you shortly.
What are 'tags'? Tags are what topic owners use to easily show viewers what the thread is about. Tags can be found underneath the title in a light blue box. Clicking on the box with a tag in it will take you to a page that lists all the topics that have that particular tag in use. For example, the tags of this topic are 'read this first' and 'clan faq'. If I clicked on any of those links it will take you to a page which lists all the topics with one of those tags in use.
Okay, what if I cannot find a clan that I like? In the rare case of this happening you can do a number of things. Firstly, you can look in the clan codex (found here) Secondly ,you could wait for a clan that suits you to come along. Thirdly you could make your own clan.
How do I make a clan then? It is very simple to make a clan but very hard to run it successfully. For a more in-depth guide check out this post. To make a clan you need to post a topic in the clans forum section giving information about your clan. In the title section you'll give your clans name, in the description you'll be giving info. Tips and tricks about it can we found in the post I just linked to.
Sounds boring, can't I just make a 'looking for clan' post? While these posts are not currently against the forum rules I don't recommend it. There's plenty of clans all ready for you to join, spend the time finding a clan you want to join rather than waiting for a clan to contact you (which often doesn't actually happen).
What's an alliance? Alliances are agreements between two clans to become closer together and to not attack each other (by either declaring war on each other or purposely raiding each other's bases). Alliances can be formed by a clan leader or anyone in authority within the clan, usually by contacting another clan's leader or government directly, and asking for an alliance. Alliance agreements can have multiple meanings, agreed upon when the alliance is made. Trading of resources, or assisting each other in war, for example.
War. How does it work?
War. War never changes.
Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage.
Wars can be declared similar to alliances - by contacting another clan and declaring it. Terms are agreed upon the declaration, and the other clan can either fight or forfeit by not fighting. Clan wars are fought in several ways, but the most common way is to go onto an agreed server at a certain time and attack each other. The winner is determined by the clan that kills the other clan's members without being all their members being destroyed themselves.
There are different ways to end a war, however. If in the war agreement griefing (the destruction of other's buildings) is allowed, then destroying the other clan's base is one way to win a war. There are also 'friendly wars', played between two, or multiple clans, as a way of having fun. The same things happen apart from the goal is to have fun, not to destroy the other clan or kill enemies.
How is a clan governed?
Clans can be governed in many ways, just like real life governments. It can be anything the clan, or clan leader, chooses. Without explaining too much about politics, here are the three most common ones:
Democracy: The clan decides things together, and works out what's right for the clan as a whole. It often has a leader, but the leader's decisions are based upon what the clan wants.
Oligarchy: The clan has a governing body, often of 3-6 members, to decide what's best for the clan and to make clan decisions.
Dictatorship:The clan is run by one powerful person, making all the decisions him/herself.
(I'm looking to expand this section with more government types, any ideas would be helpful!)
Fine, so any personal tips? Always be happy and polite on the clans section, whether you are looking to join a clan or not. A bit of kindness goes a long way! Additionally, please read the forum rules before posting. The forum rules are found here.
So there you have it, an in-depth Clans FAQ. I hope you enjoyed this post and I hope that it solved many of the questions you've been having. As previously stated, if you need myself or another member to rephrase or explain something a bit more do not hesitate to ask.
Thanks for reading guys, and happy clanning!
How do I get people to post on my thread? I usually get hundreds of views, but no replies.
I'd recommend setting up more communication methods with your members and keep giving your members a reason to post. The more your posts on your forum page the more your clan will be on the front page of the clans section, and therefore more potential members will view it. Remember that off-topic posting and spamming isn't allowed on The Minecraft Forums so make sure you remind your members of this.
Please bare in mind that bumping is not allowed on the clans section at the moment the rules say that -
Posting in a topic only to bring it back to the front page of the forum is not allowed, a topic should only be on the front page of a forum if there is active discussion taking place.
I hope your clan goes well! If you have any more questions please do not be afraid to post them here.
