Just wondering how many people are running their Minecraft servers on a linux distro out there (You know, the right way). :wink.gif:
I'm running CentOS 6.2 on an old Dell PowerEdge I got off Craigslist!
EDIT: The server was only $25 too, from a business that was upgrading their data center.
I would run my server off the linux box I got... but it's just not strong enough to support all my plugins and a decent amount of players. :happy.gif: (2GB of DDR RAM and a 1-core with hyperthreading lolz).
Personally I would use a linux-based server any day. More reliable, faster, and uses MUCH less resources. :biggrin.gif:
EDIT: And when I say "linux-based" I'm talking about those low profile, non-GUI and all command line based ones. lol

Lol my server has near those specs, except with 4GB of DDR ECC RAM *insert some other 3-letter acronym* installed and a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4. It works for vanilla purposes
I use Linux for all my server needs, whether it be Minecraft, Webservers or VPN solutions. I have found it to be universally lighter on hardware and easier to configure than a Windows Server.
Distros I have used:
CentOS 5.x
CentOS 6.x
Ubuntu 10.x
Ubuntu 11.x
Debian 9 - Normal and Minimal
Linux Mint 11
Amazon AWS Linux
Played around with other stuff, never used seriously :tongue.gif:
Same, I favor CentOS for my server applications, whether is be FTP, samba stuff or anything really.
Linux Mint 11 is where it's at for me now after unity and Gnome 3.
I really want to have a go with Arch Linux, that'll be fun to setup :biggrin.gif:
