I've always enjoyed the concept of this challenge (and that sentiment appears to be widespread among posters here) but the trouble with it is that it takes so damn long.
Yeah, I can agree with it taking a long time to do, when I did my first try on insane difficulty I think it took me 8 hours to beat the wood age, then 2 weeks to beat the stone age and a month to get halfway through the iron age.
Which is unfortunate. I've also noticed that a lot of people that post here get past the wood stage, are like "yay! this challenge rocks! i've already got past one stage!" then they go into the stone stage, get halfway through (or maybe all the way to iron), and stop. Now, these problems are generally just problems with the people that want to do this challenge, but like the concept more than they actually like the building.
I think one of the things that causes so many people to quit is how long it takes to mine without the enchantments their used to so they get tired of how long mining takes part of the way through the stone age. The thing that I think makes people quit once they hit the iron age is that it's not much different from the stone age. All you get is iron tools which aren't much faster then stone. You can mine up redstone but your not even able to use it, your also able to mine diamonds but it feels like a waste mining them without fortune but if you don't mine them up when you see them there's a good chance that you'll forget where they are, so it ends up removing the joy of finding things like diamonds also. That along with each stage getting much longer then the last doesn't help out also.
I think if you could have an enchanting table then not as many people would quit.
So I would say that the two of the only realistic ways of doing this challenge (especially with mods) are with lower requirements on the wood and stone stages, or a group of people working together (which is highly unlikely).
I think the requirements for the wood stage are fine it's just that after it the requirements increase by so much that people will get tired of being one the stages for so long.
For example on insane the first stage you only need to build 3 houses which isn't to bad.
The second stage is 2 houses, 2 community structures, a town hall and 3 towers for a total of 8 buildings, which is nearly 3times as many as the first stage.
And in the third stage you need a total of 5 more houses and 5 more community structures spread out between the multiple districts along with a licensing office, 3 shops (or 6 stalls) and a watchtower on 4 sides of the market district (or a wall surrounding it) Which comes to a total of around 18 buildings to complete the iron age which over doubles the building requirement again.
I'm not going to bother counting the requirements for any of the higher stages because I've never seen anyone other then nebux make it to them.
Even with multiplayer the challenge is pretty hard, a couple of times I've seen groups of people try the challenge, most of the managed to make it to the iron age but all of them quit partway through it because of how long it took.
Started the challange again on insane difficulty because someone wanted me to do it with them. Currently haven't build much, spent most of the time getting animals to the pens. Currently have cows, sheep, wolves and chicken. The wolves and sheep were near where we build the base, the cows where 300 blocks away in a swamp and the chicken I had to lure through 1000 blocks of extreme hills. There are pigs nearby so once I find carrots I can catch them easily. There's also a village around 500 blocks away, once I get to the iron age I'll make some rails and bring them to the village. Here's what the village currently looks like.
Nebux have you ever considered making a topic in the screenshot section showing all of the stuff you've built in your world? I think it would be neat to see all of your creations without searching through hundreds of posts to find the pictures.
The first building of my mining district, finally got around to starting the area and now I'm almost out of wood and coal. Used around 3stacks of iron yesterday also. Need to collect more stuff sometime.
the black and white looks good also the red yellow one. rest aren't so good but maybe is just my brain that needs pattern recognition
Yeah the green, pink and blue one has no design for it. The purple, blue and green one will eventually have all the blue blocked from sight once the walls for the shops are done, so hopefully it will look better. Also thinking about updating to the newest snapshot but not sure if I want to. And hoping the topic starter logs on soon so he can answer the question I asked him.
One square done and enough wool to make another two. So I'm about halfway done collecting wool for this.
That's three of eight finished, still have enough wool to finish two more but then I'll have to start shearing sheep again. The third platform uses grey, light grey and black wool the light grey marks where I'm going to put stalls. When I started building the platform I just grabbed five stacks of each color. Ended up using all of the black wool exactly four stacks of grey and all of the light grey plus four extra.
I've run into a problem where the market district is now blocking where I was going to build the port district at. Can't build it in the desert because that's where the mining district is and the hill biome is going to be for the high district. I want to keep all of the districts close together also so I can't just build it far away from the other districts. Any ideas where I can put it?
Finished the platforms for the shops now. Halfway done with the platforms now. About a third of the way done with the white wool path. I need ideas for what to put in the shops and stalls now. Two of the shops are going to be plant shops and I'm going to have a food stall.
Been working on the market area some more. Doing two of the areas currently. I'm using three wool colors per area for now, might use more if I think it would look better. Also changed my sheep pens some.
Finished the licensing office, didn't take much work to do.
Began construction on one of the eight market areas I plan to build around the licensing office.
Each market area is going to be 30x30 and made out of wool. To build all eight it's going to take 7200 wool. I also plan on separating each section with a three white path of white wool, so that's going to make it take even more wool to complete.
Insane seemed like a bit of a pain to me, with the 'no wheat/bread' rule (especially a pain since they changed animal spawning), given the relatively low drop rate of apples (your only source of food in stage 1 unless you get really, really lucky and find melons and mushrooms).
I may upgrade myself to hard difficulty, though, which would mean I'm still in stage 2, and need to separate my animals out into separate pens, rather than have them all in one. This may be problematic. Also, I have no chickens.
Oh, and I'd need to build some watchtowers, too. Especially problematic, since my mining/industrial district will overlap the farming district somewhat. Ah, I'll figure it out.
Food was never a problem for me. For the first age I cut down so many trees I didn't have to worry about running out of apples. In the second age I had two stacks of beef and three stacks of chicken. And no in the third age I have around a stack of beef two stacks of chicken and a melon farm. I've never used bread as a food source in any of my maps ever so it wasn't hard for me to get used to it.
For the watch towers I got lazy and didn't make them very fancy because they were the last building I needed before the third stage. Also I had wasted forever building my windmill during that stage.
That's why I built my districts so far away from each other. I end up using so much space while building. The sheep pen alone takes up a 37x37 block area. And in the mining district my strip mine is 44x35.
I might stop following the rule about not getting seeds from tall grass just because it's annoying when I'm clearing lots of grass. My wheat farm is growing 1400 wheat and a half over a chest full of seeds.
Since I didn't do much on my main world recently I decided to do a bit of work. First thing I did was grow some big mushrooms. Had to built a dirt roof above them so they would grow.
Then since I recently got to the iron age and can use shears I decided to make pens for each colour of sheep. But some of the big mushrooms got in the way and I had to break them.
Took me around twenty minutes to get all the sheep in the pens and colour them. I plan to have four of each colour in each pen.
What I want to work on next is collecting iron blocks for a giant bucket statue. (Just to amuse myself.) Also want to start building my markets square in the ocean. The center of it is going to be a 50x50 square made out of the different wools. I also need to start flattening the desert so I can build my mining district.
That's why I play on insane. A lot more building to do, although I build some stuff way bigger then I need to so it takes me forever to finish anything. On my main map I'm following all the rules which makes it even harder also.
