If you search for 'tiered roof' online, there are some frankly amazing examples of how you could make it work better for square buildings - if you can translate the pictures from real life to Minecraft. I like the sound of the plus shape too.
After several years, I've decided to begin this challenge again. I'm modifying the rules slightly, allowing myself to use stone tools from the first stage, and buckets from the second in order to help my limited attention span.
Looking back at my first run, I hope see my expanded building skills over the years, and a more developed town planning.
Update to avoid double posting
Spent about an hour trying to work out an architectural style for the city. I decided to attempt to stylize a standard log-plank style with an Asian touch and also a slight Nordic influence (been playing quite a few hours of Skyrim lately). It's late here so I'm too lazy to embed the images into this post, but here is my prototype structure.
The main materials are a cobblestone stair foundation, oak plank based with dark oak highlights (mostly inside), fences as windows, and some texture added by using fences as walls.
The roof beam and embellishment thereupon are inspired by VaalDeth, as I started his video series earlier today.
Welcome back! Your name kind of rings a bell, although maybe I'm imagining things.
Your designs look interesting. I like the single floor design more than the two storey design though... I think it's the roof that throws me off on the two storey. My opinion is that the building is too square for the Asian style roof since it's so shallow - how does it look if you split the roof to have more than one apex, or maybe split the roof between levels in typical Asian design while trying to keep your Nordic influence with some sturdy beams or something? I'd link some images but it's late! Let me know what you think.
How far along did you make it the last time you tried the challenge?
@jabbberman1 Good luck with the challenge and please update us if you do get some pictures to share!
It's been remarkably quiet recently... I haven't helped much with my lurking lately but I have been checking up on the thread and reading all your posts (and watching videos, of course!)
I've not got much of an update to give today, but I can say that I've been looking through the feedback questionnaire I sent out a while ago and the challenge is always in my head. I want to modernise the challenge for certain! You'll just have to take my word for it right now, but I hope to back them up with actions in due time...
In the meanwhile, I'd love to see more of the progress updates to keep things alive! You haven't let me down this far! I might even take up the challenge for myself once again in the near future.
My main issue was the fact that the town really didn't have much character. I suppose I could go around adding the kills and things to make everything less flat, but it's just adding more tedious work into what I have already done. As it stands, I plan on building at least some semblance of housing if I need any new buildings (I shouldn't, but who knows) so I won't completely abandon the challenge, but I can't see myself, say...Building a giant area for the castle I technically need to do.
To that I say: If you find it tedious, there's something wrong happening somewhere and you will soon lose interest. Maybe the skyblock idea was a block too far, scaling the challenge up too much? Not to dissuade you from carrying on, of course. Like I said though, I think the challenge is missing some 'mini-games' as such to take away from the mammoth of the challenge but not take away from what the challenge is trying to achieve. Am I going too far with this idea?
I hate to say this, but I'm going to have to stop my crazy skyblock city challenge. The sheer amount of work going into just building safe land for buildings just got to be too much.
My plan is to finish the skyblock map, then find a good modpack and restart it there with an actual landmass to work with. I'm not sure what modpack it'll be, or when it will happen, but I just can't build a decent city when I need to build all the land as well.
It's a shame to see that you won't be progressing any further with your challenge fusion, I'm impressed by the patience you had with it though! I think one of the dangers of my challenge is that it can be a bit intensive on the blocks side of things and as a result you end up doing a lot of materials gathering and it ends up that you can't see the forest for the trees. I've considered what could be done to break the monotony a bit and thought that perhaps some side objectives encouraging variety could help - what those would be though, I'm not sure.
On a related note, I've also been thinking about ways of breaking the 4th wall of the challenge so that it's not trapped inside your (typically single player) world and non-existent outside of it. I want the challenge to be something that makes 'the Minecraft experience' fresh for players and, at the moment, I don't think the challenge does that completely because I think there's a lot more to the experience than just the rules of the game. Things like mods, building styles, even texture packs that change the feel of the game - all the things that are shared on the forums and in Minecraft videos all the time. I think these are the things that are missing and could make the challenge an even more exciting experience. If I only had the time to dedicate to making this challenge better - I would spend every last minute to do so. Maybe with Christmas coming up I will get some time...
As always, it's great to see everybody's posts - from new challenge attempts to old and all the commenters! Best of luck with the challenge
I just logged in for the first time in a bit, I just checked the feedback from the form I created and the number of entries has almost tripled since the last time I saw it! Of course, it's the opinions rather than the numbers that matter the most and I've got quite a good response on what you all think of the challenge. I do intend to make use of this information, but as you might have guessed I don't get to spend as much time as I would like on you all.
Welcome to the new participants whose posts I've seen and a thumbs up to Vaal and EverfreeFire for their continued efforts
Just to let you all know, I've been watching eagerly as feedback responses have been trickling in. I've had quite a few responses so far and hopefully there are still more to come! Once I have enough responses, I plan to make use of the information I've collected - so look forwards to it!
Thanks for your post! This thread has had a ton of support from thousands of players, so I think the least I could do is (try) to maintain it and engage with everybody. I consider this thread a great achievement and would hope to see that its success keeps going for everybody to enjoy
Hello! I'm attempting this challenge for fun on the newest snapshot ! On insane difficulty of course though I accidentally locked it on normal instead of hard so I guess it's like a almost insane challenge huh? Haha.
We started with 16, 11 men 5 women, we now have as little as 3, 1 woman, 1 man, and me. All the others have died. The evil king of the Wastelands has been sending monsters of all kinds. Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, even mysterious green creatures that have been known to explode. Whatever it is, you name it, us three have probably already seen it, and survived them all. Finally after months of travel, we've found a suitable place to begin our construction. Regardless of whether or not it's suitable, it really wouldn't matter. Starved with no food to eat, weak, tired, scared, we would can't go on anymore and must rest here.
To start with, me and the others found this very beautiful place. It has many, many flowers and it just looks absolutely beautiful. Honestly I'm more than happy to begin construction of a beautiful city right here.
We later found this, a cold place, still it doesn't feel cold in the slightest. We decided to ignore it. although it looked very beautiful we couldn't risk freezing to death. So long as the area around it doesn't seem cold we agreed it would be just fine to start construction here as we planned. (I just had to say something about this since I'm so happy I found it! Partly because it's next to the flower forest which is one of my favorite biomes, and partly because outside of seed showcase seeds I've never seen this biome!)
We've began construction. Here is the first dwelling. We made it rather big in decision that we may make it our town hall! Of course before we take a step that big we would like to wait for some others to move in, but still, we want to plan ahead!
Here is thee inside.
And of course the little bedroom.
And finally the roof.
Here is the town square! (or circle rather)
The small well. (... Without water)
Despite the first dwelling being quite big, it was getting crammed. We decided we needed to begin personal dwellings for everyone! Here is the first dwelling.
The living area.
Next we began the third dwelling!
The somewhat small living area.
And it's bedroom.
Food was getting very scarce, we had resorted to almost always eating raw food and hoping for the best or occasionally eating an apple when we found apple trees. So finally after working for a few days, we gathered some seeds and began growing wheat!
And lastly, our small treasure chest that simply contains food, and a little bit of extra wood. (I had to go a thousand blocks off to find a roofed forest for all that soup! I didn't so I wouldn't need to wait forever for apples but now I'm really not sure which one would've taken longer.)
And that's all! Hope you like finally stone! Furnaces! Ah amazing I feel so privileged now! Anyway great challenge! Having tons of fun! (also thanks to the youtubers who are also doing this challenge I've been listening to all of you guys in the back while playing )
Welcome, both, to the challenge! I hope that you have enjoyed it so far and will continue to do so. Keep posting those updates!
It's good to see so many updates coming from players recently, I've finally got a new place to live and internet is set up so I can finally get back to enjoy the posts made again and watch some video updates too!
Edit: The machine requires no power, but does require 2 redstone and a gold bar, things I technically can't use until stage 4, and I'm on Stage 2.
Remember, the challenge ultimately up to you to change. I don't want all the fun to be lost on your part because part of the challenge doesn't suit what you're trying to achieve. I think we will all be forgiving, if you happen to acquire the parts for your machine, and look the other way.
Hello. I have been watching this post for around a year now, and have finally decided to actually attempt it, rather than ogle at works of art by others. I am following the classic guidelines as closely as I can, but made a few minor modifications.
It's nice to hear about your support for this thread, I can't wait to see how you do with the challenge. I always enjoy roleplay narrative on peoples' challenges and this is no exception. Good luck!
Just letting you all know that I'm still around! I'm currently on very limited internet access right now (and have many life things to be dealing with) so I've not had much time to devote to Minecraft It's good to see that the Let's Plays are still going strong, keep up the good work!
Hopefully, soon I will be able to spend more quality time here - but for now I'll be down for a bit.
