Well well, it looks like we have a sort of TMI or NEI in the game now. In your survival inventory or in the crafting table GUI, you will find the recipe book.
Click on it and you will find every recipe you can craft with the stuff you have, sorted by theme, unlocked by simply collecting the needed resources. Click on a recipe and it will appear in the crafting table with the needed items you had in your inventory. If you have not enough materials for crafting it, the recipe will have a red border.
There is even a gamerule, /gamerule doLimitedCrafting, that lets you make it impossible to craft recipes you haven't unlocked yet. Cool for adventure maps of course, or just for survival players who like a more linear gameplay.
This is a huge gamechanger and something that in my opinion should have been in Minecraft all along. Especially for new players this will make the game much more accessible and the game also much less depending on wiki searching.
You guys said you wanted an update that added content for survival; well, here you go!

"We all wear masks, Spider Man. But which one is real? The one that hides your face? Or the one that is your face?"
This thread appears to be getting a bit off-topic. This thread is for discussing information about 1.12 from Mojang. General discussions about Mojang or its employees should be moved elsewhere unless it directly relates to 1.12.
Saw a video about this new block - they were calling it 'Kinectic Sand', after that type of kids playsand that 'hardens' in water - only difference is that the [real] kinectic sand, when dry, returns to sand...
... I actually like that name
Glad the pallette is getting worked over to match each item, but personally I STILL want all blocks to have the stairs/slab variants... perhaps 1.12 will be the 'architecture update' & will include All blocks with All varients (here's hoping)
