So... what are your initial thoughts on the new 1.7 sneak peek stuff.
As for the Sunflower, I think this could be a wonderful addition to the game if you pay attention to directions, say if your home is off to the east.
Here's the info on that:
While many of the upcoming developments of 1.7 have been kept under wraps, Jeb revealedthis delightful addition to the game, which is confirmed to always face east! Very nice!
As for the falling particles, basically Dinnerbone says he's working on air particles whenever an entity falls. What are your thoughts on these? Yay? Nay? Reply!
I hate that they face *only* east. That pretty much kills any possibility of putting them in a garden, unless you make sure that your gardens always face east.

"You tried mercenary work? It might suit you."
"On a scale of one mile to Lord of the Rings, how far did you walk today?"
Sunflowers? That only point East? Are you kidding me?
Why not fix the compass so it actually points north like a real compass, or at least points to the 'new' spawn point (the last place you slept)? As it is, the compass is still next to useless.

Seriously? If you fence in an area and put sunflowers in it, it isn't going to matter which way the flowers point.

I love how you people see a new feature that doesn't affect gameplay or mechanics at all, and yet you still cry about it and complain.

And I love how people complain about complainers that say a new feature doesn't affect gameplay or mechanics and say they should fix an existing feature so it's actually useful.
All I'm saying is I'd much rather have a compass that actually works instead of sunflowers.
Wouldn't you?
What would be cool is if you can shift right click and it is placed facing you. I like the idea of it facing east but I still want to make a garden out of it.

Just relax, the sunflower doesn't hurt anyone. You can still use f3 to find out which direction you are facing.

Oh, really? What if I wanted a garden connected to my house? What if I wanted an entrance to it, and, if it doesn't face east, then I'm just going to see all these wacky sunflowers staring off all in one direction? Fenced gardens aren't the only ones that exist.
In fact, what if I wanted two sunflowers on both sides of my front door, just like how some people plant roses and dandelions on the sides of their front door? If my front door doesn't fast east, then I'm just going to have these kooky sunflowers that don't look at me as I walk in. Nope, they're just going to face east.
What if I wanted a sunflower field? Every single darn sunflower is just going to derpily stare off eastwards.
So now I think I've proven my point. It does matter which way the flowers point.
Don't know. The sun flower is kool and all, but as a decoration only facing east is kinda a bummer.
I also don't use a compass ever in the game. I've been on my world so long just know what way to go, so I don't need that fetcher. Not that it is not a bad idea.
In favor of the "Always follows the sun" option though. That would be amusing.
And the falling particles will be ok. Of coarse I'm already having issues with graphics and particles so I hope it does not cause my CPU to just give up and melt down. gata love JAVA!
I'm more interested In the fact that the dirt was well....Dirt! and not grass. I've wanted to make dirt and mudd roads for a long time.
I think they are both great. New flowers are nice, especially if they have a use. I think the fall particles are great too, they look nice, and makes it look like falling hurt.
A "real" compass is created from what is essentially a magnet suspended and allowed to freely rotate. It aligns to the Earth's magnetic field and points North and South because that happens to be the direction the arbitrarily labelled sides of the compass point. Some notes:
1. Real Compasses are not made of redstone. Because Redstone doesn't exist.
2. Real Compasses rely on the Earth's Magnetic field.
3. The Earth's magnetic field is reasonably arbitrary. It's also a bit off from the topography of the Globe as well; A compass simply aligns to the magnetic field, which is not tied in any way to North, South, or any direction and is primarily a result of the rotation of the Earth's Dynamo core. This rotation is slightly off from Earth's Topography; additionally, the polarization suffers from reversals every epoch or so.
Minecraft's world is clearly not spherical, and therefore there is no magnetic field. The compass pointing at the world spawn is useful since it's the only in-game way of finding out where the spawn is; even respawning doesn't really help since it uses a range.
or at least points to the 'new' spawn point (the last place you slept)?
That would make sense in the context of the game. I'm not sure if I'd like it. I'd prefer if they simply pointed in one direction, or, possibly, a separate compass was made that always pointed North/East/etc. A sunflower sorta works too.
As it is, the compass is still next to useless.
I use it for when I'm far away from known terrain so I can get a bearing as to which direction will be most likely to take me to terrain I recognize.
I like falling particles and sunflowers, however I do hope sunflowers have other purposes; for example, sunflower seeds and roasted sunflower seeds. Breaking a fully grown sunflower drops 1-3 sunflower seeds which you can cook or replant, for example.
I think both are pointless. The sunflower is mostly useless because it only faces east, making is difficult to incorporate into gardens, and its core function is essentially redundant. I'm hoping Jeb will change it, and that this is a sign he'll be adding more decorative plant life. I don't see a point to the falling particles.
Sunflowers are a great addition, but not as a solution to the compass problem. The sunflowers only facing east is a stupid idea and will probably make a lot of gardens look ridiculous.
I'm sure Sunflowers and fall-impact particles are a nice addition, but how many players have been asking for them?
So Mojang can only add features people specifically ask for? Okay, let me go tell them they must shut down all creative processes and inform them they must be slaves to the community and only add in items and effects that players specifically ask for.

If you see that in cartoons like Ed, Edd, n' Eddy when someone hits hard from falling, dust gos up cuz of impact

I can just use f3 for direction
As long as it's not annoying, new particles is always nice.

As for the particle thing, sure why not?
