I always wanted to see the Sky Dimension fully implemented as maybe a world generator option, but.. but... *sniff* Jeb_ thinks otherwise! This is worse than when kodaichizero decided to stop updating the Rana mod!
What are your opinions on this? Should jeb_ add it if he ever agrees? If he does, would you like for it to be a dimension (Do NOT ramble on about the Aether.) or a world generator option?
ALSO, you trolls, don't just go "Why don't you just get a creeper-flipping MOD? [Insert link to mod here]". Seriously.
There's nothing there stating that it couldn't be a world generator option. It's really the best way to go, seeing as all we have is flatlands right now.
Once the Modding API come into play, we won't have to worry about stuff Mojang does or doesn't want to add. I'm sure someone will create a decent sky dimension once that happens.
the only problem i know if i am correct is that servers used on poor hardware could take a hit from another dimension causing lag on top of that we don't need another dimension right now what we need is more content in the nether and end that's my opinion if it was a world generator that would be pretty cool though
A few more world generation options would be nice and a floating islands one is a logical addition. I'm not really torn up over no sky dimension though. It would be nice, sure, but I don't see how it would be better than the Nether.
Having skylands as a world generation option would be pretty cool. I've played a few maps that are in a skylands style but there's something very cool about generating a world in minecraft and knowing that you might be the first person to ever see that particular world. I'd love that for Skylands. Especially if ores, sand, lava, water, etc were included.

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job. Link Removed

World generation options were specifically discussed in the mod API discussion, so they are expecting that world generation hooks are going to be a standard fare and as easy to put into the game as new blocks or mobs.
At the moment, while it is a little more complicated than a new block, it isn't much more difficult. If you use ModLoader, you don't even need to modify the minecraft.jar file in order to install a new terrain generator, and adding a new dimension isn't much harder (and a part of Minecraft Forge by default). I know because I've done it. My SkyZone mod (see my sig) needs to modify the minecraft.jar file strictly because I'm also tying together the overworld, Nether, and End as three linked but different generators from the default generators.

It can't cause any lag if it's not loaded. Having a player in another dimension is no different than having a player far away from the others (which you can't really prevent.)

seriously though i would take the sky dimension over The End any day. and it's bad enough that they put in the End instead of sky dimension right when Notch said he was going to finally add it in (after the nether gets an update) and than afterwards Notch said he still might add it in, and granted i know he left and plans change but to just flat out say its never happening instead of it might happen, it just dosent seem right to me.
One of the 1.9 pre releases had a bug where if you created a new world on a server buy taking out the old world, and making a seed to build a new world off of, the spawn of the new world will be the sky dimension. However, it only covered a 500x500 area and has no trees. It also has a lot of lighting bugs.
They just don't add something "just because". Jeb himself said that he doesn't want add things without a purpose. And what would the Sky Dimension add to the game? Floating island, whoop di do. We got those already in the main-world, nothing special. Hence having an entire dimension which is basicly the exact same as the normal world, contentwise, doesn't make any sense. The End however, serves a purpose - it's an arena for the "final bossfight". You might not like it, but that doesn't change the facts.
So, flatout saying "Sky Dimension won't come" is just making it clear for the stupid ones. That still doesn't mean, a world-generation with that kind of terrain is impossible. Ask him about that, maybe that will come for 1.4 (or even 1.3, if it's easy to add)
if anything the end is the most useless place in minecraft i mean the end only has 3 unique things endstone, the crystals and the ender dragon i mean they make an entire dimension you can keep going in a straight line but no nothing will show up an entire dimension wasted on some island and a dragon that is a one time boss and even when you kill the dragon there's still little benefit nothing to really make me want to stay in the end i don't understand why they at least make the end generate after killing the ender dragon to get something to explore but really the end is a waste to say it has it has a purpose that's my opinion at least

This is not a suggestion thread. This is a discussion thread.
And if a "real" sky dimension was added, it should be a dimension rather than a world type.

If the aether ever gets updated you could do precisely that. But right now you have to downgrade to 1.0 to play it.

Version 2.1 now updated for MC 1.6.2
That's the biome the End uses.
