Personally, I think Mojang is (for the most part) fixing what isn't broken. While some of the textures do need updating, I think updating almost all of the block textures is a little unneeded. I do like the look of most of the new textures though.
What do you guys think?
I like some of the textures, most of them are okay and probably won't effect me that much but good god the emerald and diamond blocks are hideous. They look like someone's first texturepack. They are going with shading and detail but then they simplify the already detailed crafting table? I wonder what else they'll change (please let diorite be one.)

Good to see I'm not alone on the diorite thing. I think diorite looks pretty gross right now; I would prefer if it were just a white andesite. I think the wooden planks look okay but the logs look a little blurry.
Honestly I think this is a good thing. I would rather they remake all of the textures under one style so that the game feels more unified, rather than keeping them as they are. If you don't like some (or all) of the new textures, then use a resource pack to change those. I like most of the previewed textures, but I will most definitely be using the old cobblestone textures as well as slightly tweaking some of the new ones.
I think it is a good change overall. It's better that the default textures all fit one style. Resource packs will always be there to revert individual textures you don't like, similar to how "old sounds" resource packs exist to revert the changes in sound made to the game in 1.4.
I like the idea of redoing the textures but have mixed feeling about what I'm seeing. Quite a few just look jarring or out of place. Perhaps when all the textures are done, it will look...not so bad. It looks like they made the textures more detailed and polished them, then enlarged them using Paint which made them look washed out and blurry. Others are so jarring they look like they were ripped from a smartphone game like the emerald and diamond blocks.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
I just heard about this, and here's what I think...
Thank god they're updating those hideous diamond blocks. I'm fine with emerald as well, though I wish they'd do it like "chiseled emerald" or whatever since the designs are different.
I'd also be fine with having "chiseled" diamond blocks and still keeping the old texture available, but my god is diamond and gold useless for building. I can only hope gold blocks get the same treatment
It's completely unneeded. Not good. Not bad. Unneeded.
That in it of itself is a little bad, but have you... EVER... heard someone complain that the textures were too disjointed? I haven't, in my 4-5 years of playing.
But I don't think it'll make the game look forgettable. Inagine the current gravel. Those iconic jagged triangular shapes imbedded into its surface. Gravel has been through so many texture changes, and yet the newest version has always stayed strong. Same with the beacon!
So overall, I think Mojang is being too ambitious and the community is being too riled up. I'm curious how this will end up.

Console Battle is two games rolled into one: gambling (whether or not you get one of the OP weapons) and betting (which teammate won't turn on you, since teaming is pretty much a requirement to kill off another team)! Of course, it's not all chance; at its core, Battle is about triumphing and defeating other players... by kicking them out if they win to make yourself feel better.
Agreed. Now there are people saying that there needs to be a texture change, but that's only because Mojang/jeb_ said it. It's like with the 1.9 combat update. I'm not saying that combat didn't need to be changed, but there were a lot of people that agreed with Mojang on combat when not really many people complained before.
People have gotten used to the old textures, to change then is all well and good for new players and the artistically inclined but to the rest of us it's just annoying.
Nobody complained about the textures before this whole change-the-textures fiasco, but now that the suggestion comes up there are a whole bunch of people that don't like the old textures, doesn't that seem a little simplistic?
Stop using the "Just use a resource pack." argument. It is completely invalid. What about people that play on versions that you can't get texture packs or it is very hard to get them? Also, when something is default, it changes the way players see things. So far they don't look too different from the original textures, and I actually like some of them.
I just hope this doesn't turn into what happened when Mojang changed the wool colors. I wouldn't have cared if they made the new concrete all bright with different colors like that. But to change the color palate, of a common block that people use for building, was a really imbecilic move on Mojang's part. Some of the blocks, like I mentioned earlier in the post, should get a little bit of updating. I would actually like it if they toned down the contrast on the wooden plank, like the latest update for the wooden planks. I just hope Jasper does a good job.
Side Note: What do you guys think Notch thinks about the texture change?
Other versions are irrelevant to this discussion, because we are talking about an update to the Java edition only.
I doubt that Mr. Persson is aware that textures are changing; he's probably too busy watching Prisoner: Cell Block H. He has 2.5 billion reasons not to care.
I'd expect he'd pay attention a little, considering he propelled one of the most popular games ever.
OT: Changing pallettes is a really bad move. I hope with the 1.13 update we'll get something like the old wool colors. They had unique shades that just aren't available anymore.

Other versions have their updates follow the updates of the PC. I don't think Mojang would have all the textures different based on the version. Yes, this update is for PC, but it will indeed transfer to other versions.
This is a necessary thing. I have always wanted Mojang to get a dedicated artist to fix so many of the inconsistencies in the textures. Even if I don't use the default pack, one of the main reasons I switched to the Painterly Pack is because its style is consistent. I can't wait to see the new textures that tools and armor will get. Hopefully something more detailed.

Well, I guess some people see inconsistency in the vanilla textures. Could you provide notable examples?
*I think Mojang is only retexturing the blocks.

I always just make my own texture packs

The only texture I think really needs to be redone is Obsidian, but I don't like the new Obsidian they came up with

I like the new diamond block better, but I didn't dislike the previous one either.
It's other textures they are changing though that I don't like
I agree on the diamond block thing. I think it looks great now, but I was fine with the old texture.
