If microsoft can't bug test their products BEFORE release then they have no business releasing an update. My fiance and I play together all the time and now her launcher forcefully updated to this new 2.0 crap and she is unable to launch our current modpack. The screen gets stuck on preparing and refuses to go any further. Is there a way to revert back to the old launcher or no? Also.....what is this 32 bit garbage......most gamers have 64 bit systems....get with the program microsoft!

I completely agree. Runs worse on my Windows 7 system than the old launcher did. Also, I ran the new launcher in a Windows 10 Virtual Machine, and it functioned far better. Why? Because the launcher was meant to run off of Windows 10. If they can't bother to make their launcher work without forcing people to Windows 10, then I will simply use a 3rd party launcher.
*obligatory comment to point out that this is a Beta version and that it is gonna be updated over the next couple week to be more optimized*
THEY SHOVED A BETA VERSION DOWN OUR THROATS? Why would anyone think that is a good idea? It's bad enough that it activates at a completely random time, knowing that its an unstable beta makes it even worse. This is already similar to how Microsoft pushed updates that were not tested enough and caused issues for various people. No wonder why I constantly have to download a ~40MB file every day whenever I attempt to launch the game, because they put everyone on a stupid beta channel.
Dinnerbone has been tweeting a lot about it the past weeks.
And this how a program gets improved. They can't possible simulate every single setup on their computers at the office. by throwing the launcher in the deep end of the pool, thy can learn what flaws are with it, and try to fix them so it's as optimized as they can make it.
Kinda like snapshots.
Feel like pointing out that I don't have any serious issues with the new launcher. it takes like 10 seconds longer to load before I can play the game,a and that's about it. I can live with that.
IT is not similar to snapshots, because they are optional. These launcher updates are not optional. I WOULD be fine with it if it gave me the option to opt-out. Also, having to download a 40MB update every day is also incredibly annoying because my Internet is dial-up.
Steps:
1. In curse, go to settings
2. In settings, click Minecraft
3. Scroll down to "Preferred release" and set it to alpha
4. Save changes and close settings
5. Click the question mark above the settings button
6. Click "about curse"
7. Click switch to alpha
8. Let curse install and restart
I did all that and the Launcher now works properly, but halfway through the pack loading it crashes with a Java error. Does it for every pack on Curse launcher.
I downloaded minecraft through Mojang.com and if I didn't lauch it a certain way, it would give me a popup saying "this gateway either doesn't exist or you don't have permission to run it" i tried a different way one time last night, I have yet to see if it works again.

The issue might come from one of the mods you are using conflicting with the new launcher, because I doubt all your mods have been tested with it.
Also, to say that this hasn't been tested properly, it has been up for public download for weeks now for beta testing. If no one has reported a bug, it isn't going to get fixed. I am 100% sure that someone has downloaded it on Win7 and that it works.
Also remember that the launcher isn't designed to handle modpacks. Try use a 3rd party launcher, they will probably handle modpacks better.
if you played modded you would have a big problem because i cant get a single modded pack to launch they all get stuck at preparing to launch so please come down off you high horse.
lavitz2009, read my previous post to fix that. I'm getting java crashes half way through the pack loading now. "Java Platform SE Binary has stopped working" is the error I get. Tried updating Java to no avail.
Tis error message I keep getting is as follows: "Windows cannot acces the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I do eventually get it to work after 3 to 5 tries (most times)

Do you have an antivirus? If so, try disabling it temporarily or adding all of the Minecraft files as exceptions.
If that doesn't help, then it is probably the launcher itself.

It's not a beta anymore, the launcher is being pushed out to all players now. It's an automatic update and staying on the old launcher is now heavily discouraged.
I managed to bypass it yesterday by copying the files for the old launcher from another computer and putting them in the Minecraft directory. Just get offline, and you'll be fine. Also, I find it odd that the new launcher doesn't work offline. :/

If the launcher dosen't work I find it works if I close it and re-open it.

It's been more aggravating than it has been useful... Anyone know how to opt out?

Remove McAfee and install Avast. It is far better and is free.

Make a shortcut and put it on your desktop. It really speeds things up.
