I'm 20 and go to community college, so no. You don't get popular at community college. You do your work and leave. Popularity doesn't exist outside of the people that go out of their way to make themselves noticed. There was a group of kids that would hang out all day playing magic the gathering, and another group that would hang out all day outside with a hookah. They were popular simply because they were nearly always there, and they were odd by societal standards.
I go to a private boarding school where everyone's social. It's a beautiful environment which cultivates new ideas and brings out the best in the aspiring go-getters of tomorrow.
It's a diamond in the rough that is the United States educational system.

Private schools are not funded or modeled after public schools, so they're independent of the US education system.
I have a normal amount of friends. I'm friends with sporty people, nerds, goths and shy people. I am just that guy everyone knows but not necessarily good friends with.
Somehow I'm quite introverted yet am quite popular at my school and am on good terms with above half of the people there. And I have Asperger's Syndrome, a disability specifically targeting my social skills. The rest of y'all have no excuse.
Though this is mostly because I have the confidence of three men (and a dog) and am not afraid to laugh, or make jokes, at my own expense. I make an idiot of myself daily and I find it fun just 'cuz I don't give a darn.

I'm always happy just 'cause there isn't a reason to be sad.
Don't take this as there is nothing that could cause sadness. I just mean it's pointless to dwell on it. I mean, depression is so boring.

Having no friends is not a good thing.

Maybe not to most people. I wouldn't consider that an objective truth, though. I seem to be doing fine on my own.
