I have noticed this as well, and thought often about it. It seems that the 'younger generation' (ages 10-17) has a much higher number of furries, weeaboos, and people like 'bronies'. This forum is essentially made up of this generation (let's face it, 90% of users are in the age range I stated). Cultural issues are difficult to analyze, but I definitely see a difference between this generation and my own. The internet is just INUNDATED with these people. Perhaps they are the most vocal; perhaps they are the most populous. I don't know. All I know is that it frankly creeps me right the **** out. I can't help but wonder what they will do with the responsibility that comes with adulthood.
There is deviant behavior in every generation. Still, it seems that it is getting worse as time progresses. It's easy to see why, too. Mass media. TV and internet are the culprits, and they are definitely taking their toll on us. What we will become is the question that remains.
I'm a 20y.o furry. I'm off to uni in a couple months. It's got nothing to do with responsibilities, it's just another of society's fixations with labelling themselves. Stress less and you'll live longer. :smile.gif:

I'm not stressing. I long ago adopted the 'que sera sera' philosophy; I only ponder because I enjoy tracing the causality. I realize that there are furries who lead normal lives. That's fine. However, you can't say that furry is normal, by any means. It's deviant, like I said, and it definitely defines a person in some way (and, I believe, in deeper ways than we can percieve).
All in all it's harmless. I never heard of a furry blowing up a bus. I only wonder what society will be like in 30 of 40 years.
I would like to point out that even a Greek philosopher in 700BC was predicting this. In fact, you could say that EVERY generation says this about the one that comes next.
Also blaming TV and internet for it is rather pathetic.
Not blaming them is naive. One cannot deny that they have a profound effect on society and culture.

There will be lots of grey fur stuck in carpets across the globe. :happy.gif:
Touché. However, not everything is as pervasive as TV and internet. On average there are 2.24 TVs per household in America. Half of Americans use the internet for more than 1 hour a day. I think we can rationally extend these statistics to other developed nations (perhaps to a lesser extent, though).
I've noticed quite a few more bronies than furries. Of course, both are fairly nice fangroups, so I don't mind. To be honest, I've seen just as many on most other places online, they're pretty widespread.
If any senator wishes to read this, I suggest a SUSA bill. Stop United States Act. If the internet needs to babysit your lawmaking, Then there's something wrong.

"The sky is falling!"
I think the better question is why people assume, based entirely on an avatar, that a person is a furry and are thus able to create "omniscient" (are you ****ing serious? Look up the word and see what a douchebag you look like using that word) understanding of the entire culture, as well as it's proportional size.
becuase furrys are awsome.
and some poeple who go to all the wrong sitews and see all the wrong furrys only see the bad side of horny artists who like to fap over their work. (the peono side of furrys)
and some people wish they where them too.
i wish i was one my self (tails are AWSOME!)

Ah, but TV and the internet didn't always exist. The radio and newspapers used to be the primary media outlet and to some extent, still is. Society seems to look for guidance outside of itself, usually finding it in places it shouldn't. (Eg. Sexually-attractive celebrities with mental disorders and endorsement contracts.)
Simple answer to any Why? question: Why the hell not?
Less flippant answer: Deviants are more interesting than the normal. When you don't feel like being normal, where better to do it without IRL getting in the way, than the internet?
Higher proportion of furries on the internet than in real life.
Higher proportion of furries in the upper-half of the IQ range than the lower half.
Higher proportion of kids on the internet in the upper-half of the IQ range than the lower half.
Higher proportion of asperger's, autistic, and OCD kids on the internet than in real life.
Higher proportion of asperger's, autistic, and OCD kids on minecraft than the rest of the internet.
hmmm, you figure it out.

@above: My theory is the old disney cartoons most of us watched when we were younger.

That is utter nonsense.

Minecraft is a creative game.
Simple really.
They're popular everywhere, on every site, everywhere. Same with bronies, same with memes.

After all... I THINK they have fur. Real horses don't. But these 'little ponies'.. They have so much color... Why wouldn't they have fur?

We had good run, it was bliss while it lasted.
