Let's assume that the theory of the Big Rip is 100% fact. Now think of immortality as a way of never dying. I'll leave you to imagine what would happen to you, just know that no matter what, even if your body is burned, eaten, crapped out, and sucked up by a black hole, YOU DO NOT DIE!
Now think, would it be a curse or gift to live forever. Would living forever and witnessing the evolution of trillions of other species, massive wonders of the Universe, and many more spectacular sights be worth and eternity of darkness?
I think it would suck. You'd have to keep finding a new girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband and friends OR not have any connections to anyone because as they age and die, you don't.
Mmh... yes. It would. Because even if the universe ended, that doesn't mean an eternity of darkness, since a new universe would probably form sooner or later. The materials can't just disappear somewhere, anyway. So there will always be something to look forward to.
What kind of immortality are we talking, no ageing or illness so you can live forever or being completely invincible and unable to die from anything?
If its just no ageing scenario then you could just end it when you see fit..
But if its complete invincibility then it would be worth it to observe the end of civilisation and the universe..

It's about your imagination, no matter what you asociate with immortality, would your life of wonder be worth eternal darkness?
The only way it would be not be a curse is if you could choose to end your immortality. Or, if you had in addition to immortality god-like creation powers. Assuming the only thing that is stipulated is immortality, it would be a curse... Hell, immortality alone doesn't keep you from pain. Imagine burning for years as the sun engulfs the earth, the feeling of suffocation for eternity as you float through space, etc. No thanks.
Do I feel hunger and pain? If the universe comes to an end, will I be a consciousness floating around in nothingness? I think that it would be neat at first, but eventually you would descend into madness. I vote curse.

After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.
This thread reminds of me the movie "The Man from Earth", a really good film that talks about the many questions people would have regarding an "immortal".
As for the whole immortality thing. I would be more then pleased to be immortal. Un-like everyone else, I wouldn't get bored. Living for thousands of years changes you a lot, your perception of time is different and your motives in life completely different. The reason mortal people ever get bored is because of their fast paced life. Living a mortal life gives you limited time to do as you would like. Being immortal you would know better, you wouldn't be in constant need of stimulation. You could find numerous ways to keep entertained. You can't think like a mortal when planning your existence as an immortal
Being immortal isn't as bad as people make it out to be, they just don't think deep enough.
would hate it... honestly...
watching loved ones die in 100 years, civilazions going up and down through wars and famine for 10,000 years, you would get bored of life after 10,000,000 years. and after 4,000,000,000 years the sun will supernova and blow up the earth so you would be super bored for all eternity drifting through space. Good luck finding another planet, if you were travelling at light speed it would take at least 3,500 years to make it to the closest inhabitable planet (assuming you were going perfectly in the right direction and not even 0.0000000000001 degrees off angle)
The only upside would be hiding in a corner playing MineCraft forever :tongue.gif:

Good Points:
Cannot die to to Illness.
Cannot die by Murder. Do what the hell you like, you simply wont die, take a space helmet off, your head would explode, but you would still be alive (???) Go in the Army, be a super soldier.
Bad Points: When the universe ends, you will be a floating nothingness. Zombie Apocalypse, if you get bitten, and you do get Reanimated, then the world is ****ed, as you are immortal, they cannot kill you.
And around 100+ reasons.
That's false, you'd have some advantages but you're still a very easy target. If they really wanted to **** you over, they would dig a hole 10 feet deep , put you in it, then cover it up.
But for how long? Keep in mind, due to being immortal your perception of time is a lot more different then mortals. You have lived for billions of years, you don't see everything the way anyone else would. At about the 2 million years mark you'd be seeing days go by in seconds. This isn't a bad thing, as it only makes it seem like time is going faster. So say you're drifting along in nothingness for 1 billion years, until presumably another universe is created, it wouldn't take that long in "you time".

But being immortal, you wouldn't love anyone. You can't think like a mortal when planning your immortal existence. You wouldn't want to bother with things like love and affection. You wouldn't feel emotionally attached to anything, unless said thing can last as long as you. After a while time would go by so fast it wouldn't matter.
Besides people would consider you a god, think of all the perks that gives.
It would be a gift. The massive amount of knowledge you could acquire being immortal would be worth it. However, it would also be tragic, as many of us believe life is devoid of meaning. I don't, but just sayin'.

Well the human brain can only hold so much information. Also, just because you have all the time in the world, does not mean that you can keep up with the up-to-date knowledge that you're seeking. So for example, say you studied mathematics for 10 years in your life, in the next 10 years there will be even more things to learn. The worst part is that things you thought were true, turn out aren't. You can study as much as you want, but the facts keep changing. There comes more and more things to learn, you can't keep up with what's coming out.
Although, if you were to be immortal you would make a ****ing great philosopher.

So you're saying there's a point where you can't remember any more information because your brain space is all used up? That would suck. It's really weird thinking about it, actually.

I recommend you watch the movie "The Man from Earth".
Makes you think a lot on the subject of immortality.
And I wouldn't consider it as "all used up", although I did phrase it incorrectly, but it's more of a "I forgot". It the same reason why kids forgot half of what they learnt in school over the course of 2 months.
gift. because if one is immortal completely they would be able to witness EVERYTHING even when this universe is destroyed by blackholes and reformed they will be able to witness it.

Even then, you'd get tired eventually.
Also, you'd have to keep coming up with ways to keep life fresh.
EDIT: I mean, it's a gift up to the point where the universe is destroyed and you're floating around endlessly, the it's a curse.
Are you aware of what the Big Rip is?
If its just no ageing scenario then you could just end it when you see fit..

Rockin' High Check it out!
Yup! I have a fairly decent imagination so I'm sure I could find a way to keep myself entertained :tongue.gif:
You would be bored and forever alone as while you live you get to suffer mental trauma as your friends die all around you.
Cursed.
