"If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens."
I was browsing the forums when I noticed this quote placed in someone's signature. It was such an overwhelming awful collaboration of errors that I felt I must write something.
First, let's start with the definition of teen. All though it is argumentative, for the most part the term "Teen" is commonly accepted as a person involved in the period of life between 12 and 20 years old (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn).
I know, I'm a bit frightened too, but I had to make sure everyone reading this post is on the same page. Let's begin the rant.
To ANYONE who would endorse the aforementioned fact, I applaud you. Your level of ignorance (and possibly even stupidity) have shot through the roof. I'm not sure if anyone bearing a similar signature is just too young to completely understand the depth of their world and their surroundings, or they just don't have a desire to attempt to understand foreign culture.
I know it's difficult to understand, but there are living conditions different than that of your very ordinary, middle-class suburban life. How about this one (as provided by Water.org).
884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately one in eight people.
One eighth of the world doesn't even have access to clean water. That's 12.5 percent of the world.
Every twenty seconds a child dies from a water-related disease.
In just one day, more than 200 million hours of women’s time is consumed for the most basic of human needs — collecting water for domestic use.
12.5% of people don't even have access to clean water and you think they give a **** about Facebook? America only makes up 4.52% of the world's population. Where you aware that 85.4%, or 5,727,771,964 people make up the population of DEVELOPING countries? Do you think that they give a **** about Facebook as many civilizations still exist in hunting and gathering stages? Where you aware that only around 3.5% of the world's population has access to the internet? And 99 percent of Teens would "DIE" if Facebook and Twitter were destroyed?
Has "DYING" just become a joke now? As people DIE because they lack basic healthcare and medicine, it's okay to pretend that those people don't exist and in actuality the entire world is living in harmony and peace? Dig a bit deeper before making up facts that make you look like a complete ***hole.
Your title conflicts with your post. The title implies a very general amount of things, and that you'd mention multiple things in your post. Your post itself rants about a singular thing. (same thing as your post: picking apart the whole idea because of failure to be extremely specific)
The quote mentioned (is actually 90%/10%) does not imply every single person. As the average american (which most people are here), it ignores everyone else but themselves. Once you only foucs on the american population, access to internet rates go up quite a bit. Everyone I've met constantly uses the computer/internet/cell phones.
The quote only really says, "Too many people use those websites. I'm one of the cool kids that doesn't."
There's also this cool word called a hyperbole:
hy·per·bo·le (h-pûrb-l)*
n.
A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect, as in I could sleep for a year or This book weighs a ton.

You not understanding something is not a sufficient reason to say that it is stupid.

Posting that you don't know the answer serves no purpose besides making you look like an idiot.
Not searching before posting makes you look like an idiot.
If you're going to quote something even semi-long, PLEASE put it in spoilers. If you are the first post besides the OP in a thread, PLEASE don't quote it unless you have an excellent reason for doing so.

Now, now, children, your uncle DethPotato is here to tell you to be nice to each other regardless of each others' opinions. He is also coming here to tell you to either make a new thread regarding this topic, or get back on the main topic of this thread. Or, you could slightly change the topic of this thread so that your current discussion fits.
Everyone has seen the very numerous threads bashing the various features of 1.9, Notch, Mojang, etc. Can we turn down the hating? Just a little bit? Sure, everyone may not be pleased with enchanting, or potions, but really, is it at all realistic to expect that Notch will undo his work from the past several weeks and take these features out? One, that would infuriate far more players than it might pacify, and two, something like that is completely unprecedented in a game as popular as Minecraft. Complete feature removal? Forget about it. Nobody is forcing you to use enchantments and potions.
.
Adding an XP bar does NOT, I repeat NOT turn Minecraft into an RPG. An RPG, to quote the dictionary, is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting and take those characters through a structured narrative or structured decision making.
.
Fantasy elements are often found in RPGs, but the reverse is NOT true. Fantasy != RPG. XP bar + minor fantasy elements does not and WILL NEVER equal an RPG in Minecraft, since Minecraft is completely devoid of a plot whatsoever.
.
Finally, at the end of the day, you have to give Notch and Mojang some credit for what they have accomplished. Minecraft has over 3 million users. If Mojang was making bad gameplay decisions, why is Minecraft one of the most popular video games of all time? Because Mojang knows what they are doing. The success of Minecraft is testament to it.
.
tl;dr: If you cannot come up with a completely valid reason for claiming that 1.9 ruins Minecraft, please keep your mouth shut.
Let's stop for a minute and, instead of living our lives with the knowledge of how privileged we are, we should live it with the knowledge that there are people less fortunate than us living somewhere else, with significantly less resources than us. It couldn't be possible that the person was just making a snide joke that has been passed around for a long time. Nooo, he's an insensitive American that doesn't give a spit about the people that suffer in other countries.

I appreciate the thought and time you put into your well-crafted response.
The entire point of the title was really just to draw out and over-emphasize the degree at which I would be ranting in an attempt to attract more (appropriate) attention. I figured a run-on sentence denouncing facts made by preteen forum members would spark an outrage of comments containing flame which I could read when boredom strikes. I was contemplating a title with fairly ironic and humorous content, but I felt it wouldn't accurately represent the content I was planning to put out.
However, I do have quite the "bone to pick" with your second paragraph. Please try to refrain from pulling defensive statements out of the blue. To say the majority of people using this forum are "Average Americans" is a broad generalization and shouldn't be used to create a counter-point. Also, avoid using real-life scenarios in a counter-point. All you have done is really destroyed any credibility your argument had in the first place and then helped reinforce the points I made before.
When you say:
"Everyone I've met constantly uses the computer/internet/cell phones."
Your reinforcing my comment regarding (what I believe to be) the inability of the average American teen to see beyond their front yard. Well, maybe that's not quite enough credit. We'll go with the boundaries of the United States. I understand that the luxury items mentioned in the statement I quoted have become "the norm" in American culture, but I was particularly referring to the fact that America is not the world. America can not be used to create an accurate statistic of the population that would "kill themselves" over the loss of their social media site of choice.
I know, I know.. your probably screaming at your screen right now after that last sentence. I understand the premise of a hyperbole (trust me, I'm beyond the eighth (or seventh) grade). However, this rant was not particularly referring to the over-dramatization of the actions a teen would take in the destroying of the aforementioned social media sites, but rather pointing out truly how naive the signature truly makes anyone honing it.
Anyways, once I again I appreciate anyone trying to challenge my original statement. Beats the hell out of crossword puzzles.

I prefer 'Did you know that 89% of statistics are made up on the spot?'
But that's just me.

Why hello there, you can call me Lukis =) Nice to meet you.
I fail to see the humor in the quote OP has presented ( and possibly damaged our brains with ). I see nothing but a false statement.
But I'll still laugh,
HUR HUR HUR

Things can only be humorous if they are funny.
Hyperbole to make oneself look cool is never funny. It's obnoxious as hell, and it makes you a hipster ._.
