I completely agree that shoplifting is immoral. But I am a hypocrite and still do it. The best way to decrease shoplifting is to make laws have more jailtime so kids will be scared to start.
Really, they just need judges to stop simply slapping offenders on the wrist and actually give them the punishments required by law.
Too bad we don't have the jail space to administer the punishments.
Who votes we set up penal colonies?
Community service or maybe just fines would do well. People hatin' on Guantanamo Bay.
Instead of jailtime then, how about a large fine. Like ever 1 dollar of stuff you walk out of the store with, you have to pay 50 dollars.
I think this would work, except that most shoplifters are kids who probably don't have the money, thus making their parents pay thus hurting the working class even more. Reality is, just don't do it.
Making the parents slap the **** out of the kid when they get home.
Stealing is stealing, and it shouldn't be done, even to huge stores like walmart or whatever that turn millions of dollars in profit.
When I was younger, I used to steal sometimes. Mostly because I was younger and I didn't have a job or any money. I didn't steal anything major, just a chocolate bar or a pack of gum every once in a while, but looking back on it, I realize it was wrong.
Also, stealing $100 of stuff in one go is pretty ridiculous, and if you did that much constantly, it probably would hurt their profit a little. The most I ever took in one go was about $5.
anyone who says shoplifting is wrong hasnt watched aladdin
aladdin was technically a shoplifter, it wasnt exactly wrong because it was steal or starve
oh and shoplifting from a big buisness is ok but not from a small business
if you steal a $5 slinky from walmart your costing them like $5 out of several million dollars, wow
but if its a small business with only 1 store then your taking $5 out of a few thousand or even a few hundred so that money has a noticable and important impact

Even if you stole 1 bubble gum, other people are influenced to do so if you think shoplifting isn't that much of a pain. Many people start shoplifting that gum, the company loses profit, jobs are lost, families aren't fed, etc.

Wait, you're using Aladdin as a justification to steal? Are you some sort of a moron?

Stealing to survive is still wrong, and should be discouraged, but I think everyone would have sympathy and let it pass.
Stealing from a large business is exactly the same as stealing from a small business, when we are thinking of morality. In fact, it's the large stores that serve the poor best, so you are hurting the poor even more by stealing from a large chain store like Wal Mart.
It baffles me how people feel justified when stealing from big corporations.
Because everybody wants to be a hunter-gatherer, they're just not willing to admit it to themselves. This is just one of many manifestations of their subconscious desire.
I am just wondering about what people think about shoplifting. To be more specific, shoplifting from major chain stores like Walgreens or walmart, not small businesses. I would never steal from people who work to make something for themselves and probably have a hard time making due. I have shoplifted for many years, getting gum, headphones, and pretty much whatever. Now I have more money and buy almost everything, am wonder how much damage I did to big chain stores/how much moral damage I have done. What are your thoughts on shoplifting also.

Community service in a penal colony, perhaps. :3
You heard that, green and red.
It's frowned upon in the secular world, too.

You know, people used to shoplift from my store when I was a store clerk and it cut into our profits, so I'm doubly against it.
Pretty much, shoplifting sucks.
Here's an analogy:
I go and steal your computer.
How would you justify THAT?
It's the same as if I just went and stole it from Walmart.
