I'm working on a bike trip from Phoenix, AZ to the grand canyon and back for when I get back from my AIT. I was wondering if any one on the forums were avid bikers?
Not avid, but I do enjoy bicycling. It pisses me off when people in their cars tell me to get off the street, though. One person even went so far as to throw a plastic bottle at me. Being my own self, of course, I took the liberty of picking it back up, following the person, and throwing it back into their car at the next intersection.

what ever happened to riding on the sidewalk? I have seen people not only bike in the street, but RUN on the street with a perfectly good sidewalk right there.

I'll just go for the cheapest one that has working gears, working brakes, a comfortable seat, fits my size, and, optionally, suspension, although not in both wheels as it saps speed. I'm not too picky, as I usually just use it to ride around town.

As byciclists, we are given full legal rights to merge with automobile traffic. When are you going to start telling motorcyclists to use the sidewalk, too? Oftentimes, the sidewalks are overcrowded, too narrow, (in the case of my neighborhood) in particularly bad repair, etc. to the point where it is dangerous to be on the sidewalk compared to the road. Also, they're called sidewalks for a reason.
EDIT: Also, I can ride a bike at 30MPH on the street. I can't do that on the sidewalk.

In some states it Illegle to ride a bike on the side walk. Although (like in Arizona) the law may prohibit it in most cases, people still do it with out getting in trouble because it is not a big deal. Surprisingly when I first started riding bikes I found out that you can even get a ticket for ignoring traffic signs and signals.
On top of that some bicycles are meant to be driven on roads and the bumps and general terrain of the side of the street and walk ways would damage wheels. Very expensive wheels if I may add.

I see the road for motorized vehicles and sidewalk for non motor vehicles. It would be reckless for a motorcycle to use a sidewalk.
I don't know about where you live, but in my area we have perfectly good sidewalks and people insist on being in the street even when there is no one else on the sidewalk.
Every time there is a cyclist on the street you are basically taking up the whole lane as people are paranoid that they will smack into you, then here comes the lawsuit!
the solution is to make the sidewalks and streets SEPARATE BUT EQUAL!

I see you replied to this before I edited it. But yeah, some bikes are designed for the street, and even all-terrain bikes can generally go much faster on the street than the sidewalk.
well, car vs. bike turf wars aside (because this will vary from area to area because of laws and sidewalk conditions) I use to bike all the time before I got a car.
Once when I was with the boy scouts I went on high adventure in the Colorado mountains. Best bike riding I have ever done. rough trails, and long smooth roads (with bike paths on the side). Even went so fast down the mountain road we were breaking the speed limit.
Even had to repair other scouts bikes with my duck tape.

I own a Caad9 still factory standard. It's really light and fast. I'm only like 14 but I am considering joining a biking team this summer. I'm not avid but I do bike a lot but I am not nearly as good as my father and some of his bicycling friends because they bike like every time they have time.

Ugh, that reminds me. One time, I forgot about my newish bike when I went on a vacation, and when I got back it was gone. So a few days after that, I went down to the bike store to get a replacement, and there was my stolen bike, just sitting in the store, for sale! GRRRR, it made me mad!

LOL!
Mine lasted a year before my little sister left the garage door open... The irony is that 10 feet farther back, there was 2 $3000 bikes my father owned, but mine was in front :\.

...........Some places don't have sidewalks dude. Believe it or not the vast world beyond the middle class suburbs actually introduces some variations in structure.
This might sound weird but I USED to be a serious biker when I was kid. It's typically hard to imagine a kid being a strong biker/traveller and then transitioning into a different lifestyle when he's in his twenties. It's not self pity, it's a fact>> I grew up with a shitty household to call home and I would love for nothing more than to be away from it. I got a mountain bike for my tenth or ninth birthday and from that day throughout the next three years or so, that's the only thing I did was ride that thing everywhere I could. At this point I lived in Puyallup Washington, and I went as far as to ride all the way to the Cascade mountains and made my way into some hills at the base of Mt. Rainer.
Believe me, if this adult life of college and money making and craving a couple hours of free time passes me at some point, the first thing I'm gonna do is buy another bike and ride. I miss it so much.
On the whole driver vs. bystander in competition over the road, I kind of get it, and at the same time I empathise with people on foot. I live in a place where I get cut off by runners, bikers, people walking their dogs, and people in golf carts all the ****in' time. I unerstand that "hey I'm trying to drive here get the **** out of the way!!" mentality, but I also know what it's like to be one of them.
In the end, I think it's just road rage bolstered by the ego trip of being in a ****in' vehicle. People tend to think that they're impowered because they're in a machine that could decimate your existence. I don't know what it is exactly but people lose some of their humanity once they're behind the wheel. Just the way it is. When I was a kid I got mooned, had a McDonald's bag thrown at me, people yelled at me for no apparent reason and I got drive-by spat on when biking. **** 'em. Can't let it bother you.
Nowadays I see a jogger or someone walking their dog enjoying the fresh air and I think, "good for you. I can't wait..."
