You could write a dissertation on the changing musical climate of the 00s/10s. As such I'll just point out a few key things I've noticed.
A. What people latch onto. The stereotypical radio-listener of today learns the lyrics of a song before almost anything else. They don't really pay attention to the instrumentation, they don't really care about anything except for whether or not the lyrics are catchy in terms of the actual content of the words and also in terms of the tonality of the singing.
B. What people expect from music. The stereotypical radio-listener of today expects very simple things. They listen to the radio while in the car, and expect nothing more than something catch to hum and sing along to. When in a club, they expect nothing more than a heavy beat that they can feel in their sternum. When at a bar they expect nothing more than a bit of ambiance that they can tune out.
C. The feeling that there is no new ground to tread. For the last half decade or so, music has consistently gotten "harder" as we have developed new ways to more accurately express anger through music. This reached a peak in the nineties as rock and role branched out into all different forms of metal, screamo, and hardcore. The expectation built up from several decades of music getting harder over time has caused the youth in particular to latch onto these various forms of heavy music and continue attempt to somehow make music even "harder" in some way. The advent of electronic music was an interesting tangent, but it has existed since (I don't know, the 70s maybe?), so it did not precisely alleviate the urge to develop new types of music for the youth to latch onto. As the expectation for completely new music continues to fade, people have come to expect less from the music they listen to, which is backed by the fact that almost everything played on the "best hits" type radio stations are all repetitive synthy stuff with a single lyrical phrase or two.
Well I've been up 3 hours too long already, wish I could make a more coherent and comprehensive post.
I ****ing hate HARDSTYLE WTF IS THAT A SONG WHAT, Techno, Trance, Rave and any other **** of that matter. I also hate majority of the pop songs on the radio.
I enjoy the old songs, classical music, and electrical music.
Dubstep is fine, but on most times, it's ****. Drum n Bass songs are cool. And etcetecetec ****. Noisia, Spor, Receptor are my best picks on electro.
I don't like some of the songs of the Beatles, but I do like most of them. They can be catchy, and if not, they can be boring as hell. I can't really name on the old songs, I just borrow and dig through my sister's iPod for those, and dig through my mom and dad's collection of songs. Nirvana, Radiohead, The Beatles, Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc etcetc
As for classical music, I don't really know artists and much, as I just borrow from my dad's CDs lol.
I can go with some raps, especially aussie hip hops. Most of them are ****, still.

Ah just ignore the sheep and leave them to there blind attention seeking ways.
Noisia, Split the Atom as your avatar? HIGH ****ING FIVE.
The only thing funnier than the elitist pricks generalizing an entire generation's taste in music as bad, as if that's a provable fact and not their opinion, are the kids who think they have to come in and defend their taste in music. Do you like a certain artist or genre? Good for you! Listen to them if it brings you pleasure and don't listen to what anyone tells you. Can't stand that band all those kids seem to like these days?? Congratulations, you sound like my grandfather. Now shut the **** up and go listen to what YOU like. Every generation hates what the younger generation listens to, or whenever someone does something different. Get over it.
Although I do believe that, to some extent, everyone wears music as a fashion statement. It's impossible to look at music objectively.
Hmm, I had to think about this for a bit. I guess you could say that every time you express your tastes, you are making a fashion statement of sorts. When I think of a fashion statement, though, I think of someone who wears something to impress someone else. Someone who cares more about what others like than what they like.
There is no such thing as good or bad music, only music you like and dislike.
I have more respect for those who genuinely enjoy Justin Bieber's music than those who dislike him simply for his ubiquity (which is 99% of you guys).
Modern music like Justin Bieber and Katy Perry is not any worse than music produced 50 years ago like The Beatles or the Rolling Stones. It's different, to be sure, but not "crappier" in any way.
oh dear god....... I really cannot believe you just made that comparison....
Just because you don't like a genre of music doesn't make it crap... why do people always assume modern pop music sucks because it autotuned and blah blah blah. Just because it is not what you grew up listening to or because it does not fit your personal tastes DOES NOT make it crap. Music changes and if you don't like the changes then so be it, others may.
I for one love pop music. I have heard plenty of pop songs that have meaning behind them and autotune is simply a new style of music, it doesn't mean they have any less talent. But wait! I still like other genres of music as well, pop may be my favorite, but I listen to metal, rock, rap, hip-hop, country, oldies, alternative, classical, and the works as well.
And in case you were wondering, no I am not some tween girl obsessing over Justin Beiber. :sleep.gif:

Well for me, I classify singers as someone who can sing. Simple enough, right? However, every single song I hear on the radio that isn't monotone rap is autotuned. Do they deserve my respect because they can plug their voice into a computer? No. I could autotune some crappy song right here on my computer and send it off to the radios.
I don't listen to the crappy music today because the singers have no talent. They can't sing without autotune and they don't even write their own songs. I don't feel like supporting some rich idiots because it's the "popular" thing to listen to.

Let those noobs listen to Jonas Brothers, JBiebs, and Ms.Gotta Get Down On Fridays.
We don't want then to all switch to good music. Then it won't be good anymore.
As much as I hate the crap people listen to nowadays...
I'd hate it more if every person listened to The Beatles.

That's true.
The general population are a bunch of idiots. Radio stations tend to play "pop" music which these people listen to. If radio stations played the Ramones, David Bowie, and other great artists I wouldn't listen to them because idiots listen to them.

While I do agree many singers today do not sound that great live, I still like the music. Not because the singer themself has or is lacking talent, but because of the music they produce. You may not like it because of the artists, but I could care less for the artists. I know they are rich, usually stupid, arrogant, and I do not generally support them by buying their music. I listen to music for the music, the lyrics, the beat, and more. Bad singers can still write and produce good music, which is how I see it.

Half of people these days autotune their voices to cover up their DIEING CAT voices.
Rap barely counts as music to my opinion,It's just a 5 second drum track looped over and over with some guy shouting "**** **** PIGASS DA MAN BRINGIN ME DOWN! SLAPPIN MA HO AND GETTIN HAIGH"
There are SOME exceptions to that however,THOUGH NOT MANY.
I'd rather listen to a hobo banging on a trash can than some overhyped teenager who's only famous because someone said "Wonder if I can get money off this garbage?"
At least the hobo's music actually has meaning!
He's down on his luck with the cardboard box by the bus station blues and he's gotta dance like a monkey to get his soup.
R black? Her Mommy paid some douchebags to write a song for her to sing then they ****ed up her voice (Witch didn't sound like Steve Erkil before autotuning...) And who'd they get to write it in the first place,A kids show?!
SERIOUSLY. It sounds like the opening for a ****ing kids show you'd see on nick JR!

Well there's crap in all genres, but to just write rap off as some guy boasting about his hos and drugs is the same level as me stereotyping metal as just screaming and taking life too seriously, which is extremely stupid.
Like I said,Some exceptions. :3
And isn't MOST metal that anyway? Think how many shitty garage bands there are that play metal,Then count up all the good metal bands you know,The good stuff is always the smaller gem in all musics,Rap included.
Chances are,Out of the hundreds of thousands of rappers,Only alittle over a thousand actually fit the category of "Quality music"
Same applies for everything else,I just haven't seen many good rappers,Probably because someone said their songs were "Booooring,Needs more pimpwalking drug dealers"

Haha good one, although that doesn't even technically count as music.
Why do people call music they don't like crappy?
Because people think that their music taste makes them superior than one another. It's the hipster mentality.

I like orchestral/choiral music with a metal/rock style edge to it.
