Welp, the way I see it, the more loose the clothes, the more tissue you need and the more expensive it costs so you look richer or something :3
Originally with tunics that was the deal. If you could afford more and nicer cloth, you bought it and wore it. Shorter tunics were either because you bought as little cloth as possible (poverty!) or because you were a servant and your smaller tunic represented your indentured / chattel status; another form of poverty.
However, for groups that didn't have the right stuff available for nice, long, flowing robes, they made leather breeches and vests and stuff. It was a necessity thing, at least at first, since leather is too stiff for good draping action...
A guy at my place of work, as he was leaving, came down the stairs in one of those. It was a bit larger and more elaborate. But yeah.
Pretty much everyone began snickering and saying some pretty awful things about him in those few seconds he was there.
Of course, I'm sure he was prepared for that. To be wearing that kind of thing in a public venue, you have to be ready for the scrutiny. If you aren't expecting it, well...then you're pretty naive.
One thing I've always wanted to do is buy a trench coat to airsoft with and pack it with handguns and shotguns, and john woo the airsoft field. Too bad it's heavy and only limits movement.

Tophats are NEVER out of fashion.
