So I was reading through a certain chat thread earlier today and something curious sparked my interest, and I thought I might make a new thread out of it. It was suggested that some things in our world have no purpose, but I kinda wanted to disagree....
Even when I think more about it now, I can't yet come up with anything that doesn't serve some variety of purpose, no matter how great or insignificant that purpose may be. I'm not talking about things in science (for example) that don't seem to have a purpose just because we haven't discovered enough about it to define a purpose for it yet, I'm referring more to the things that we do already have knowledge of.
Feel free to share your thoughts, are there certain things that serve no purpose whatsoever?
Religion, mandatory vaccinations, excessive amounts of youngsters on MC, Google+ on Youtube, p2w, Monsanto, the electoral college, DLC, toenails, and TV ads.
I'll stop now to prevent taking up all of Curse's databanks. So yeah, you can see I'm a bit pessimistic.

Yes, the pessimism lol
But I feel that all those things you mentioned do serve an obvious purpose to someone, even if that someone isn't you ^
I wouldn't mind hearing why you think those things are void of purpose?

Alrighty, I'm game!
Religion: Ever since I was a small child I just never got the point of it. I've always ran off of logic, and religion always seemed to violate it. No matter how hard I tried I just never got it. If there is one that I do however, that would be Buddhism. Mandatory vaccinations: I could go on about the mandatory part, but why not just keep you and your body in good enough condition and take precautions to avoid ever getting infected in the first place? That's like trying to drop a bomb that's not armed. That and I have a grudge against vaccs since a friend nearly died when they were tested on him. Excessive amounts of youngsters on MC: Mostly due to the setting of the game and how successful the game was prior to this and how much it changed. Mojang was also in a good financial seat previous to the influx, and the current population is damaging reputation, acting as a turnoff for more potential purchases. Google+ on Youtube: I think this one is mostly self explanatory, but I have yet to find a use for Google + at all, apart from letting them track you. P2W: If you have to resort to doing the p2w path you're doing something wrong. If you have correctly designed something and stay in touch, etc, you will develop a loyal following, ensuring more financial stability and ideas. Monsanto: We can already breed and hybridize plants, why should we be copyrighting biological material and messing with nature's function? The electoral college: It functions in a very shifty way, and doesn't proportion correctly to the population's vote, and the people in the electorals can actually vote themselves, apart from "representing" an x number of people. DLC: Very similar to p2w, reasons wise. Why add something later on, or did you just make a half (you know what)ed just to sell more dlc? Toenails: I can understand fingernails, but why toenails? We don't have claws like other animals, they can't be used for hunting or climbing either. TV ads: Most of the time you just mute or switch the channel or TV off until whateevr you're watching returns, which can be quite a while. A potential drive off to viewers. It may also ruin the feel a show or movie is going for.
I know several of these are controversial, but I feel a lot better now that I listed why I feel they hold little/no purpose. My apologies if this thread gets hijacked into a different subject because of it. My pardon if I also sound like a snark.

No problem.
But I still feel the point has been overlooked. To all of your reasoning, in my opinion, I can still see how each one you mentioned does serve some variety of purpose, maybe not for you, but for someone, and therefore they still have purpose in the world.
And hey, maybe these things you mentioned do have a purpose for you as well.... maybe they're here to just frustrate and antagonize you XD
But thank you for making an effort to write all that.
Oh, and just to say: I always thought toenails and fingernails were there to protect the flesh and bone in the end of your fingers and toes to some degree. I never considered trying to hunt or climb things with them. That's gotta hurt

Yep. Generally something is going to have a use for someone, somehow. There goes the saying "One name's junk is another man's treasure" and that can go for many things. One particular use is some skilled craftsman go to yard sales and scrap yards and purchase stuff, then make scale buildings and even fully operational miniature locomotives! (Garden scale railroading is what that tends to be for.)

Religion: To define our purpose and explain how the world works. I'm not religious myself, but that's how I see it.
Mandatory Vaccinations: To stop plagues, epidemics, pandemics, and discomfort for you.
Youngsters: They're its community. It's a children's game.
Google+: Agreed.
P2W: Purpose = money
Monsanto: To make the world a better place.
Electoral College: To keep the power out of the hands of the mob.
DLC: Purpose = Money
Toenails: To give you one more thing to worry about
TV Ads: Tp uphold the capitalist system.
What's the purpose of an appendix? Nothing. What's the purpose of the universe? Nothing (IMO). Plenty of things have no porpoise.

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost
From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring
Renewed shall be the blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king
Yep. Generally something is going to have a use for someone, somehow.
Yes, that. I'm currently of the opinion that the only things that don't serve a purpose, don't exist.
Also, I have thought of something since my last post which may actually have no purpose to anyone in the world at the present day, well, maybe.... But I'm gonna give it some more thought before I mention it specifically.
Eh, nah. I reckon everything has a purpose, it's just that some things have more apparent purposes than others
To address the chat thread one, yes. At first a system of numbers that is not real seems kinda useless. However without them our electrical technology would not nearly as advanced as it is today.
To address the others posted in this thread:
Religion: Moral guidelines
Mandatory Vaccinations: To protect those who medically can't have vaccinations
Youngsters in Minecraft: It's a game. Young people will play it
Google+: To encourage more people to try Google+ and thus increase stocks, etc
P2W: Financial gain provides a pretty clear purpose
Monsanto: I dunno, maybe so people can eat?
Electoral College: Unrestricted democracy leads to problems, look at Ancient Greece
DLC: Something stupid like being paid for your work
Toenails: They provide counter-pressure on our toes, helping us balance
TV Ads: Financial gain
Appendix: Residential for good bacteria in the intestines
Vaccing has no point; people who die to plagues didn't eat their veggies.
lol, yes, eat your veggies! But IMO, if something seemingly has no point, that doesn't exclude it's purpose. For instance, steam powered engines may no longer have a point because more efficient varieties of power have been discovered, but the purpose of a steam powered engine still remains, to power an engine, and I'm sure someone out there still uses them.
Also, I guess I should mention the appendix now, as I was going to earlier. An organ that apparently lacks a specific function in the body, although it probably did have a function at some point, which I think makes it vestigial (A term used to describe a genetic structure that has lost its ancestral function). Therefore it has no real function at the moment, but that doesn't mean it has been rendered completely void of purpose, as it does give some scientist research value in their endeavor to find out how it was useful. Such knowledge would provide information as to how our bodies functioned differently from today, and uncovering such knowledge may provide answers that assist in current day medicine, among other things. Yes, it was a stretch to find a purpose for the appendix in our day and age, but scientific study certainly does count as a purpose.
Mosquitoes have no purpose. The good stuff (feeding on nectar to pollinate flowers, and fish food as non-adult) can be replaced by bees/flies and stuff like frog eggs, respectively. And even the bad stuff can be replaced. If you want annoying sounds/movements you have flies, if you want disease-carrying you have fleas on various animals, if you want blood sucking you have leeches.

They exist to make us miserable.

Why do shirts with pockets you don't even use exist? Why the pocket? Fingernails and toenails are just stupid and I would happily live without them, with just skin where they were.
Fashion and balance respectively. Or interchangeably, I won't judge
I'd like you to imagine no indentation, no toenails, just regular skin like on the other parts. It's also pathetic that they keep growing and you have to cut them every once in a while. While I was in the bathroom, I was cutting my big toe nail and it ripped, all the way to the other side, I pulled it out and blood went everywhere, not the entire toenail, but a part of it, this was 2 weeks ago.
Or y'know, you can learn how to not cut your toenails like bloody Jeffrey Dahmer

Yeah you do. Shouldn't be so down on yourself. I'm sure you have a lot to offer the world.
And if it helps at all, I like you.
Aww thanks

I'm sorry, have you tried walking without toenails?
They provide counter-pressure to forces applied by weight. Same with fingernails and grabbing things
Or y'know, you can learn how to not cut your toenails like bloody Jeffrey Dahmer
