Anybody saying that school should not be mandatory is terribly deluded. An education is a right and to abandon it will leave you with no meaningful place in society. I think school is as dumb as the rest of you do, but it also does teach you essentials. The world needs more educated people, not less, and to make schooling non-mandatory is the complete opposite of recent aims.

Well, I mean, if schools had some form of decency and handled things better, then sure, I could see it working out. But most schools tend to be absolute trash, with learning most of the time being unbearable from the teachers to the students. Of course, there's private schools, but those costs insane amounts of money, and aren't guaranteed to be better, just stricter.
But then again, if everything was perfect like that, we probably wouldn't need schools at all because everyone would already be smart enough without it... I guess you're kinda right, I mean, I wouldn't mind it being mandatory if they weren't such jerks about it, but then again, we ruin it for ourselves when dumb things like what's been mentioned in this thread is more common than things that are done right.

If you had the option to go back in time to cause yourself to never go to school (in a reality where it is non-mandatory) because they're 'such jerks', would you do it?
Would you wish such a world upon the vast numbers of ignorant children in the world who think school is the worst thing ever and would drop it in a heartbeat (i.e. most of them)?
I guess I had a great school. You had a large variety of electives, so you could chose what you wanted, though you did have some required classes of course. The teachers were nice and understanding. You could consider them your friend. The only way you could fail a class like English was if you didn't hand anything in. I guess my experience wasn't the normal one.

I'd teach myself, honestly. I don't mind the learning bit, just everything else. Especially since I can't find use for (most of) what I've learned so far. (And forgotten more than half of it, probably. I guess that's a 'no'.

My school's alright, except there are only about two or three AP classes, which leaves a lot to be desired on a college application to a competitive school.
Wow, some of the crap you're all put through is downright illegal here
I think I accidentally caused the first serious DaBomb post ever. The universe will rip in two.
OT: So you know that Shakespeare stuff that is so very mandatory?.. Yeah. It's terrible and shouldn't be. I think my grasp on this language is good enough that I needn't be forced to read a deprecated version of it for... No discernible reason.

Ah yeah Shakespeare. He's put on a pedestal as a shining beacon of story writing while being the biggest crap-talker in history.
Reading Shakespeare in high school was kinda fun though
well to understand this you need to understand that my old middle school is next to my old elementary school and my high school.
aged 12 i was walking home when a high school kid pushed me into the road. he wasn't allowed to see his friends for 30 minuets the next day and had to write a letter of apology which read "sry i pushed u in2 road" (exactly how he wrote it)
yeah.

Personally, I find it annoying when students will rant about how a perfectly acceptable teacher (at least in my eyes) is a terrible affront to basic education.
It's also really disheartening when people complain about math. Even if you're not good at it, please don't complain how it will be useless in your life. All lessons teach you something, and even if you won't need math, you'll still need to use it a little bit.
I suppose, as an actual annoyance against the school system, I dislike being forced to take PE as an elective.
And even if you don't use the math you're being taught, it still teaches you a thought process. You'll be a lot better at figuring out things, even if you're not using summations or integrals.

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear.
And even if you don't use the math you're being taught, it still teaches you a thought process. You'll be a lot better at figuring out things, even if you're not using summations or integrals.
Here's how math works.
Teacher gives us a lesson. We copy the equations they give us.
Teacher gives us a worksheet. We look at the problems, replace the numbers in the example equation with the numbers in the actual equation, do the simple math that goes with that, and go down the entire process that way.
They're doing this new thing called accelerated math that means we can use our notes at all times because there's no more tests. We just bubble in forms all day.
So in Algebra 2, I learned the process of... replacing numbers with other numbers? Yeah, that sure helped my logical thinking...

Really? My math teacher isn't anything like that. We get so many word problems that make your head hurt.
Maybe it differs from program to program.

That's a huge problem with your math education, not math education in general.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad math teachers out there. People go do math degrees and find themselves unemployable, so they get a DipEd and go teach. They may be good at math, but they're bad at teaching.
On the other side, the teachers who go the mile and get a degree in education mostly go for Languages and Arts because they're easier and more straightforward to teach, making the education market saturated in those two subject areas.
John used this equation to find out how many points players will get in a game (or something stupid like that). If z is 10 and x is 6, what is y?
Physics Paper:
Voltage = Current x Resistance
Timmy has made a circuit with a fixed resistor. If the resistance is 10 ohms and the voltage is 6V, what is the current?
You all know you've been there at some point.
Yeah, I had questions like that, but also questions that gave us some of the information and required us to use what we know to put together an equation (or use various properties or theorems we were taught) to find what the problem is asking for. So it wasn't just multiplication, it was encouraging problem solving and complex thinking.

Nah, its fine. Its just that occasionally this stuff does come up. I get why, it just amuses me when a question comes up on my Physics paper which is literally plugging numbers into an equation we're given. Not the school, its the exam board. Its literally just a maths question with some Physics context. Its not like you even have to remember the equation or know why it works most of the time.

Yeah, it's kind of sad that some schools are just herding the kids like cattle through the years, never really teaching them the stuff that matters.
