So over the past week or so my news feed in FB, suggested YouTube feed, and much more of my internet browsing experience has been flooded by people doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I have even had a number of people 'nominate' and 'suggest' that I take part in the challenge.
Now before I go on a little rant about how silly this is, let me clarify that I do think it is a good thing to be studying ALS (or as I have normally always called it motor-neuron disease) It is a terrible sickness without a cure, and is estimated to occur once in every 50,000 people. I have read that since the challenge was erected, nearly 60 million dollars have been raised. Therefore, I refuse to dispute the net-positives from this internet meme.
However, as with most internet memes, this one will fade out just as fast as it broke ground. I will never understand charity fund raisers like this one because it truly highlights human ignorance. I have already seen nearly 60 videos of the challenge, and only a very small fraction of the participants actually said anything about ALS.
This challenge started to both raise awareness about the disease and obviously raise money. The original premise was to nominate or tag someone to the challenge and then that individual would either have to donate $100 to the charity OR dump ice water on his/her head. The challenge has now turned into just a bunch of people dumping water on themselves for the hell of it.
Look, I do not blame people for ignorance, nor do I want to attack any individual. But does it honestly take an internet meme to motivate people to donate money to a charitable cause? There are thousands of causes out there that need more support from people. Many of them are objectively more worth while than ALS research because they help a wider demographic, have a greater chance of success, and/or encompass a larger mission where ALS would benefit in its completion.
My point being, this challenge could just as easily been called the 'Cancer Ice Bucket Challenge' or for 'AIDS' It didn't even have to be sickness without a cure, it could have been used to raise money for organizations like MADD (mothers against drunk driving) or DARE (drug abuse resistance education)
This challenge could even have been used by politicians and special interest groups if they had thought of it. Could you imagine a 'GOP Ice Bucket Challenge'?
A better challenge would have been to donate money for something YOU are passionate about leaving the response rhetorical. But lets be real, that would require thinking. A trait hard to come by these days.
As far as the challenges that have been issued to me, sorry I will not be participating in the challenge. Nor will I be donating money to the ALS Foundation. I have my own non-for-profits I am interested in supporting because I believe and relate to their cause.
So just because the people who created the challenge made it about ALS instead of something that you think is more worthwhile you bash on people for donating money and having fun because it is a stupid internet meme?
So you hate people donating to a charity while making fools of themselves on the internet? If this didn't happen R.I.P 60% of youtube.
What do you mean RIP 60% of youtube? And I don't have a problem with people making a fool of themself, what I have a problem with is how corrupt every non-profit is.
I have to say, alongside Gangnam style, planking, harlem shake and so on...... it's just another internet thing I don't get and that I hope passes by quickly.
Ok. Just so you know, this has raised something like over 60 Million dollars for ALS. Last year, in the same amount of time, they raised something like 2 million.
I mean that if you get challenged, just don't throw water on your head, it's stupid. Just donate.
Because it's something fun to do. Look, this was developed by a kid who had a friend who had ALS. What do you think would get more attention for most of the community?
Asking people to please donate?
Giving them fun activity?
You can't say the first, because stats show that they've made more money, a lot more, with the second.
So just because the people who created the challenge made it about ALS instead of something that you think is more worthwhile you bash on people for donating money and having fun because it is a stupid internet meme?
No I totally think funding ALS research is worth while. Just like AIDS research, disaster relief, and sex education are all worth while causes to donate to. My point is that most people who have seen these videos and have done the challenge have no idea what it is about, nor have any personal interest at stake for this cause over any other cause.
What do you mean RIP 60% of youtube? And I don't have a problem with people making a fool of themself, what I have a problem with is how corrupt every non-profit is.

Do blue ribbons help anyone? Does pinning a Rising Sun badge in remembrance help anyone? Does playing a cricket match with pink stumps help anyone?
Touche.
You tip a bucket of iced water over your head to raise awareness. Just the same as you play a cricket match with pink stumps to raise awareness for breast cancer, or pin a Rising Sun badge to your shirt to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lies for a better world.

Throwing ice water on your head for charity is a terrible idea.
Just donate if you get challenged...
You're missing the entire point. If you dump the water on yourself and nominate 3+ people, each of those people now either have to dump water and nominate more people, or donate.
If you just quit and donate $100, then they've made $100. If you do the challenge and nominate 3 people, and 1 of them donates $100 and the other two continue the challenge with 3 of their friends, now a few links down the chain you'll have $1000+ donated.
In my circle of friends, the rules have been that you donate $20 AND you do the challenge OR you donat $100 if you don't. So really, not doing the challenge is sort of selfish because it means you get to be lazy AND less money will be donated overall.
The best form of publicity is making people do something fun and getting them to talk about it. Who care if it's become a meme. Let people do stupid stuff for fun and/or charity.
Do any of you know if you have to be nominated to do it, because I really want to.
It's generally done that you need to be nominated, but I've seen people do it without being nominated so go ahead
Why wait?

You are asking if you have to be nominated to dump ice water on your head to raise awareness for a charity? Or are you asking if you have to be nominated to donate money to a charity?
Either way you have partially fulfilled my point......

A remarkable statement that no one has ever suggested any anytime anywhere.......
We have 2 issues arising from this now.
1. People are changing the rule to make themselves exempt from donating if they choose to accept and carry out the challenge.
2. People are abusing the popularity of the challenge to make videos that do nothing than earn viewers for their own subscribers and ad revenue.
To put into perspective how skewed the idea of the challenge has become, I didn't even know ALS existed until Mega64 MADE A PARODY OF THE CHALLENGE.
So does the rest of the world
