Get a DS Lite to start, and wait for the price of the 3DS to go down. My DS Lite has lasted me seven years, and it's still working (though the top screen is broken).
My DS Lite is currently 6 years old and is in perfect condition hehe
Anyway, 3DS is cool, you can play the newer games as well as older ones, and it has a bunch of features such as Mii's and a game store. So I'd go with that.
I would suggest getting a 3DS, because you could play 3DS games as well as DS games.
As well as, if you want to play GBA/GBC/GB then you could easily get an extremely cheap GBA off of eBay.
I randomly searched for GBA's on eBay, and found one which was only $5.
Plus, 3DS is fabulous.

was that supposed to be a insult because i cant tell
Your sarcasm is not welcome here. You were given 2 choices, DS and 3DS. Stop advertising Playstation. NOBODY CAAAAAAARES.

Thanks for giving ideas for a Sony console but I'm a major fan of Nintendo games and already own a PS3.
Dang it guys people keep saying 3DS but I'm so broke. Maybe I'll wait a few weeks then. Maybe get Super Mario 3D World for the first game ;P
It's final, getting a 3DS and a little later down the line a GBA.
I'd like to suggest Fire emblem awakening as a good 3DS game. If you want a challenge and maximum enjoyment, select classic mode so you become inclined to actually care about unit placement.

if the 3d effect on the 3ds is not a big deal for you then i would recommend you getting a 2ds (i have one and love it) 3d gaming makes me sick so i got a 2ds and i have to say its a nice design and much cheaper

You know you can just keep the 3D slider off. It's not like the games force you to play in 3D. Besides, it has lesser memory, mono speaker, and it can't fold. You're better off getting an XL either way.

i know but the main reason i got a 2ds is i love the design for it and it was on sales for 100$ here in canada

Growing up with Mega-Man and games of that nature hard games are honest my favorite. It looks pretty interesting maybe I'll pick it up.

I like the 3D for games like Super Mario 3D Land. I played it with it (at bestbuy) and it was so much fun.
It really reminded me of Super Mario 64 (another game I love).
I have a 3DS, and I pretty much recommend it. I've been having a lot of fun with Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and I've been able to play all of my old DS games (since my DS Lite broke). The only thing I have against it is the pricing of the games. I don't know if this is just a universal Nintendo thing, but they seem to hate price drops with the 3DS. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS remake is still $40 wherever you look. The remake itself came out 3 years ago, and it's a REMAKE of a N64 game. It's not just Ocarina of Time that's expensive either, the same can be said for Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64, etc. It can be really frustrating sometimes, considering home console games from 3 years ago (like Skyrim) are about $20 right now.
That is a pain, I didn't know that. I'm pretty broke at the moment and won't be getting much money so are there any really cheap games quality games? Those things tend to not match up so I'm guessing no..

You can get them a little cheaper on Amazon, minus the shipping and handling costs. Also there is a deal with Club nintendo in which if you register a 2DS/3DS and a select game, you get a digital copy of Pokemon X/Y free.

I saw that but sadly I won't be getting enough money to purchase a 3DS yet. I plan to have enough by this time next month.

Well, the 2DS is the most durable, 3DS XL has the biggest screens, and the 3DS and DS are on par with their best feature, portabality. which one do you like?
If I could have anything I'd do 3DS XL but I'm going to go with 3DS.

there is a few good 3ds games for a cheaper price
now i live in canada and we have eb games instead of game stop but there pretty much the same thing now if your into used games (i shop for used games some times) but i can get games that are really good for a ok price, resident evil Revelations i can get about 25$ brand new Canadian and about 15 used at the right store, new super mario bros 2 you can get for about 30 new and 25 used, super mario 3d is good but it will cost you $$$. but you can get some great 3ds games for a cheap price if shop them used and at the right store
woot woot this is my 500 post so happy (not really)

While you can still play your older GBA games on the DS Lite, a lot of GBA titles are downloadable on the 3DS' Nintendo Store. So you can easily play some of the games on the 3DS still. While a lot of them you won't be able to, the more popular ones are still there for your enjoyment.
Although I stuck with the DS lite for a solid 3 years, I switched to 3ds once I realized they weren't compatible with each other. I use my old ds lite when I want to play GBA games, but I say go with 3ds.
Honestly, I'd get a 3DS and a Game Boy Advance SP if I were you.
That way, you can have access to the 3DS, DS, Game Boy/Colour, and Game Boy Advance libraries.
I haven't checked the prices of an SP lately, but if it's around $30, pick one up. If not, a DS Lite would be a good idea for Advance games.
I was in a very similar situation when I ended up buying my 3DS. I thought about getting a DS Lite so I could play any Advance games I had lying around, but I decided to get a 3DS anyway. Haven't missed any of my Advance games.
3DS, because you can play DS games and have access to the newer games.
I own both (Nintendo DS lite and 3DS XL), but I only use my 3DS now.
Oh, and I think it's important to remember that Nintendo is shutting down all online services for the Wii And Nintendo DS on May 20th. http://kotaku.com/ni...i-ds-1532216462

Wait what...does that mean I can't download games off the store? Man that stinks. Nice FMA profile picture c:

Games I'd recommend:
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Etrian Odyssey (4 and Untold)
Animal Crossing.
Pokemon X and Y.
You can also play DS games on a 3DS!
Check out my game! It's an open-world, sandbox text adventure.
